Fulfilling a long-due need for Army personnel and their family members, a four-storey ‘Reception Hall’ that could accommodate social gatherings, is to be built in Colombo on a suggestion, mooted by the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake by the initiatives of the Army Seva Vanitha Unit (ASVU). The auspicious foundation-laying ceremony at the premises in Maitland Place, Colombo 7 took place Saturday (31) morning, headed by Mrs Damayanthi Ratnayake, President, ASVU in the company of several senior officers.

Security Force Headquarters-Mullaittivu (SFHQ-MLT) recently enlisted thirty four young Tamil youth to the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) from Mullaittivu area and commenced recruit training for them at Pudukuduirippu Battalion Training School on Monday (26) under the directions of Major General Jagath Dias, Commander, SFHQ-MLT. The recruit training will continue for 16 weeks under the supervision of the 15 Sri Lanka Artillery (SLA).

A recruit of Special Forces (SF) under training in general area of Habarana succumbed to injuries after he collided with the night train while engaged in a compass training module during early hours of Saturday (31). Warrant Officer II A.P.S Pushpakumara of 11 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) who had been serving the UN Peace Keeping Mission in Haiti, died suddenly of a cardiac failure on admission to the Level III Hospital in Dominican Republic on Thursday (29). Warrant Officer II Pushpakumara (39), who had actively contributed to the successful completion of the humanitarian operations during 1995-2009 was awarded the Rana Sura Padakkama (RSP), in recognition of his bravery in the operations, in addition to several other medals, such as Uttama Seva Padakkama (USP) for distinguished service, Poorna Bhumi Padakkama, North East Operations Medal, Anniversary Medals, etc.

Guna Jaya Sathuta Padanama’ (Goodness Foundation) once again launched its humanitarian assistance project, distributing a large stock of school accessories among students who are residing at the Poonagala Relief Center on Monday (19).
