Army Achievers in Apparel Industry Felicitated for Their Success Story

Differently able War Heroes, who excelled in the Army-managed apparel industry after injuries sustained in the battlefield, received an inspirational moral boost when their contribution to the growth of the novel industry was lauded and felicitated on Thursday (5) during a glittering ceremony at Maharagama National Youth Services Council auditorium.

Both disable officers and soldiers working in the Army-managed ‘Ranaviru’ Apparels Ltd at Yakkala and the most recently opened, Alawwa ‘Ranaviru’ Apparels Ltd, have been successful in producing almost 90% of the Army’s requirement for formal uniform sets and a certain percentage of track kits and sleeping mattresses, needed for Army personnel since recent times, due to the sheer dedication and commitment of the workforce in both these factories.

Both factories run by ‘Ranaviru’ Apparels Management Board in the Army went into this area of professionalism with the inauguration of the first ‘Ranaviru’ Apparels factory at Yakkala in December 1998 after the effective employment of a few disable Army personnel. Following the speedy technological progress it has achieved within a few years, the Yakkala factory is set to produce 1080 uniform sets a day with the support of fifteen disable officers and 851 soldiers. The proceeds from the Yakkala factory enabled the Army to inaugurate another new factory for the disable at Alawwa area which began its production in January 2010.

The Yakkala one achieved international recognition in the year 2010 and received the ‘5S’ Excellence Award, recommended by the Japanese 5S Guru and his team. The factory products are also expected to be exhibited at international exhibitions in the future.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army, impressed with the receipt of the ‘5S’ recognition, awarded by the Japanese Guru, paid a special visit to the factory in March last year and personally extended his best wishes and greetings to the workforce and its management.

Thursday’s ceremony at Maharagama, headed by Major General R.M.D. Ratnayake, Chief of Staff, representing the Commander of the Army, saw 3 officers and 50 other ranks of both these factories who have emerged as outstanding performers, receive laurels for their excellence, dedication, productivity and commitment to the improvement of the factories.

Special gifts were thus awarded in the ceremony to Best Manager, Best Production Manager, Best Production Assistant, Best Machine Operator (General and Special), Overall Machine Operator, Production Supervisor, Assistant Production Supervisor (Production categories), Special Machine Operators, Worker of Best Quality and Standard, Best Packing Worker, Best Storekeeper, Best Human Resources Manager, Best Purchasing Unit and Best Financial Controller categories, amidst applause.

Major General R.M.D. Ratnayake, who is also the Chairman, ‘Ranaviru’ Apparels Management Board, on behalf of the Commander of the Army, gave away those special gifts to those employees who, undeterred by their disability, did their best for the sake of their organization and the country at large.
