Sportsmen in VIR Hailed in Colourful Colours Night

Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR), hailing and recognizing sport skills of its sportsmen, had its Colours Night Thursday (24) evening at Colombo Bishop College Auditorium during a glittering ceremony.  

Of the total 147 VIR recipients of Colours for their achievements in sports, 20 VIR sportsmen turned eligible to receive prestigious Army Colours during the ceremony which saw 4 VIR Battalion was adjudged the Best One.

With Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army as the Chief Guest, accompanied by Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, Seva Vanitha Army Branch, the colourful event began soon after the welcome speech, delivered by Major General R.V Samaratunge, Colonel of the VIR Regiment.

The two-minute silence, as is the practice, revered the memories of fallen VIR War Heroes who made the supreme sacrifice while defending the country. The VIR Regimental song afterwards reverberated saluting the Regiment as a token of respect.

Several eye-catching musical and cultural spectacles that were choreographed by famed artists intermittently held the spectators spellbound as the day’s agenda unfolded one after the other.

The grand presentation reached its climax as the Chief Guest entered the stage to make the final segment of the presentation of Colours to the best of the VIR. Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya congratulated all 20 who received Army Colours from him and awarded the special trophy to the best battalion, 4 VIR.

Major General D.R.A.B Jayatillake, Commandant, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force,  Major General R.M.D Ratnayake, Chief of Staff, Major General A.L.R Wijetunge, Deputy Chief of Staff and a host of senior officers attended the occasion.
