South African Team On Tour To Wanni

A six-member foreign delegation, headed by Mr Ebrahim Ebrahim, South Africa’s Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation visited Wanni region last Friday (18) in order to receive an update on Sri Lanka’s post-conflict development roles taking place.

Major General A.K.S. Perera, Commander, Security Forces Headquarters, Wanni (SFHQ – W) welcomed the delegation on arrival at the SFHQ – W premises and conducted them to the auditorium.

Major General Perera afterwards presented a comprehensive account of different development roles, being carried out by Army troops to the visiting delegation upon successful completion of the humanitarian operations against terrorism some two years ago. He also elaborated on security arrangements that have been made, making life easier for all the people in Wanni.

The delegation took time off to see remaining former LTTE combatants, now undergoing rehabilitation at Poonthottam Rehabilitation Centre and shared a few thoughts with the rehabilitees.

In the meantime, the same delegation on the same day (18) had a separate round of discussions with Major General (Retd) G.A. Chandrasiri, Governor for Northern Province at his official residence. District Secretary for Kilinochchi Ms Sri Jayarani and General Officer Commanding 57 Division were associated with this exchange of views on various development projects.

Later on, the delegation toured Kilinochchi area and received a firsthand experience.

Together with the South African Deputy Minister, Mr Geoff Doidge, High Commissioner for South Africa, Mr Roelf Meyer, Advisor to the visiting Deputy Minister,  Mr Ivor Jenkins, Advisor to the Deputy Minister, Mr Henk Kruger, First Secretary, Office of the Deputy Minister and Mr C.V. Sirimahna, Security Officer were included in the delegation.

Ms Piyumali Dissanayake, Protocol Officer, Ministry of External Affairs accompanied the delegation during their Wanni tour.
