'Bitter Terrorism Deprived Children of Right to Education,' Commander Tells SLAVF Scholarship Recipients

Children of Officers and Other Ranks serving the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF), received their scholarship grants   for the year 2011 during a ceremony at BMICH on Tuesday (15) morning, headed by Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army as the Chief Guest.

The arrangement, organized for the second consecutive year by the SLAVF, on a proposal made by Major General D.R.A.B Jayathilaka, Commander, SLAVF, this year offered 461 scholarships to students of Grade 5, Year 11 (GCE O/L) and university entrants who had obtained the highest scores in their respective examinations. Those children belong to families of SLAVF officers and other ranks, both serving or have retired from the service after operations. Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya gave away a large portion of scholarships to the recipients.

‘Terrorists in the past deprived the people in the north and east of their inalienable rights to education and human rights. During the three-decade long bitter fight against terrorism, attempts were made by those elements to scale down standards in all spheres of the social fabric. You, as children should not be surprised to hear that there could be a man in the north and east who has failed to receive an iota of education in the past 30 years due to cycle of terrorism. They using force violated their sacred right to education and confined their valuable lives to underground bunkers,’ the Commander told the gathering in a brief address after award of scholarships.

‘The unwavering leadership of our Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, HE the President Mahinda Rajapaksa who rose to the occasion firmly with courage and also the able guidance, offered by Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence, enabled the Army to take the lead in realizing the aspirations of the entire citizenry at that point of time, for which you, as children of respected heroic parents, should also feel proud,’ Lieutenant General Jayasuriya added.

The SLAVF with 111 Battalions boasts of a proud history of more than 130 years and its decision to recognize talents of these children and award scholarships as an incentive to their future, need to be appreciated. My special thanks go to both SLAVF Commandant and the Deputy Commandant for this arrangement, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya noted.

Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, Seva Vanitha Army Branch, parents of scholarship recipients, invitees and a gathering of senior officers, including Major General R.M.D Rathnayaka, Chief of Staff, Army Headquarters, Major General A.L.R Wijethunga, Deputy Chief of Staff and Major General A.C Obeysekara, Deputy Commandant SLAVF, attended the ceremony.
