Taekwondo Training to Take Root in Jaffna

Introduction of Taekwondo as a martial art to Jaffna youths took place at the Duraiappah stadium last Sunday (14) with the support of Army Taekwondo Association and Korean Taekwondo instructors.

A large crowd of school children, Mayoress for Jaffna Mrs Y.Pathgunarasa, Additional Director of Provincial Education Mr V.T Selvarathnam and Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Commander, Security Forces Headquarters, Jaffna, the Chief Guest on the occasion witnessed the display of the introducing team.

Sri Lanka Army Taekwondo Association who volunteered to assist the local organizers to promote this martial art in Jaffna presented their talents in self-defence, power-breaking and other techniques of Taekwondo, the only martial art included in the Olympic Games.

The main event followed a one-day Taekwondo training session for Jaffna students by Sri Lanka Army and Korean instructors at the same venue. Nearly 300 school boys and girls attended the programme organized by the Sri Lanka Army Taekwondo Association under directions of its chairman Brigadier B.C.J.A.F. Rodrigo who is also the vice chairman of the National Taekwondo Association

A Taekwondo Club for Jaffna youths is to be a reality soon.
