A FESTIVAL full of traditional sports and games was organized in Vavuniya with coordination of the Security Forces Headquarters-Wanni (SFHQ-W), Police and Civil Administrative Authorities to mark the Sinhala and Hindu New Year.
The festival with the approval of Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka was held throughout Monday (13) at the Vavuniya Urban Council grounds.
Hundreds of civilians in Vavuniya, majority Tamils, including youths and children were seen enjoying climbing of greasy pole, eating buns, weaving cadjans, sack race and other traditional New Year sports.
Vavuniya District Secretary Mrs. Charles, General Officer Commanding 21 Division Brigadier Senaka Wickramarathne Deputy Inspector General of Police Nandana Munasinghe and a few distinguished guests attended the opening of the event.
Commander SFHQ-W Maj. Gen. Jagath Jayasuriya also witnessed the New Year festival and gave away prizes to winners.
The day’s programme culminated with a grand musical show enjoyed by all participants.
