  • Commander Meets New Archbishop

    COMMANDER of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya called on the newly-appointed Archbishop Rt. Reverend Ranjith Malcom at his residence on Monday (14) evening and extended his greetings on the new appointment. Commander during his interaction with the holy dignitary gave him an update on security developments in the north and east in the aftermath of eradication of LTTE terrorism. He also explained the arrangements in progress with regard to the resettlement of displaced people with the active support of the Army and the government authorities.

  • Troops Join Civilians for Sharamadana Work

    TROOPS of three Brigades under command to the 52 Division in Varani recently took part in a few social welfare projects with the close coordination of civilians living in those areas. Four officers and one hundred other ranks of 10 (Volunteer) Gemunu Watch serving under the Nagar Kovil-based 521 recently organized a Sharamadana campaign to renovate the Manalkadu-Varuni main road running via Maseri. Either side of the road was cleared while dilapidated sections of the road were patched to make it motorable for the vehicles.

  • LTTE Claymores Among Recoveries

    NORTH & EAST: TROOPS operating in the general areas of ADAMPAN, VISUAMADU and PUTHUKKUDIYIRUPPU conducted search and clear operations in those areas on Tuesday (15) and recovered  fifteen T-56 weapons, thirteen claymore mines, one Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG), three T-81 weapons, one Multi Purpose Machine Gun (MPMG), one M-16 weapon, one 40 mm grenade launcher, one .22 weapon, one repeater shotgun, two Self Loading Rifles (SLRs), one T-97 weapon, three T-97 magazines, two Zisco VF-150 sets, one I-com computer set and one Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

  • IDPs to Get More Freedom of Movement: Minister Refutes False Claims

    THE Government is anxious to relax movement restrictions in IDP camps but the strict screening process must continue to stop LTTE cadres masquerading as ordinary citizens slipping out of camps to create havoc in the rest of the country, Human Rights Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said. Briefing the members at the 12th UN Security Council Sessions in Geneva, Minister Samarasinghe refuted allegations by the High Commissioner for Human rights Navineetha Pillai who ‘characterised’ the relief villages and welfare centres housing internally displaced as being ‘no more than internment camps’.

  • LTTE Funding Lines Intact, Says India's National Security Adviser

    THE LTTE leadership may have been wiped out in a massive offensive by the Sri Lankan Army, but the threat from the dreaded terror outfit is far from over.National Security adviser M.K. Narayanan on Monday warned that with the Tamil diaspora, which was the main source of funding for LTTE, spread far and wide, the threat of the outfit raising its head once again could not be ruled out. Narayanan said that the funding lines of LTTE were still intact and there was always a possibility that disgruntled elements in the Tamil diaspora across the globe could get together to help the terror outfit regroup and rearm.

  • Troops Recover more LTTE Items from North & East

    NORTH & EAST: ARMY troops serving in the general areas of VISUAMADU, PARAYANAKULAM, PARANTHAN, MURUSAMODDAI, PUTHUKKUDDIYIRUPPU, KUPPUKULAM and UDAYARKATTUKULAM conducted search and clear operations in those areas and recovered two claymore mines, fourteen hand grenades, twelve anti personnel mines, two Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG), two 81 mm mortar bombs, six 60 mm mortar bombs, two T-56 weapons, three T-56 magazines, fifty-eight Improvised Explosive Devices (IED).....

  • Artillery Athletes Carry Away Championship

    COMMANDER of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya as Chief Guest and Mrs. Manjulika Jayasuriya, President Seva Vanitha Army Branch recently witnessed the final events of the Sri Army Inter Regimental Athletic Meet. The sports meets took place at the Sugathadasa Stadium last Thursday (10) with the participation of a large group of sports enthusiasts. Over 1500 male and female athletes representing 24 Army Regiments vied for the Championship which was finally secured by the Sri Lanka Artillery (SLA). Participants, during the sports meet held for three days established five new records which had earlier been made by Army athletes. The 480 weight class male championship was secured by Sri Lanka Artillery Corps Team. 

  • Church Area Receives Clean-up

    CONTINUING their humanitarian missions in Jaffna, troops of the 10 (Volunteer) Gemunu Watch serving under Nagar Kovil-based 521 Brigade recently organized a tree -planting campaign at the St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Pothpathy, Jaffna. Before planting saplings in the premises, troops conducted a Shramadana and cleaned the surroundings of the church with the assistance of about thirty residents in the area. Three Officers and forty Other Ranks took part in the campaign and 10 (V) Gemunu Watch troops  have organized tea and refreshments for all those who participated  in the event.

  • New Therapy Center for Disable War Heroes in the Offing

    A PRELIMINARY round of discussion to explore possibilities of promoting mental and physical well-being of the physically-handicapped War Heroes affected by terrorism was recently held at Army Headquarters auditorium, chaired by Mrs. Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB). The meeting focused on provision of possible residential therapy and treatment to those War Heroes who need close attention, psychological guidance and counseling while strengthening relations among their next of kin.
