  • LTTE not only armed, trained ULFA too: Former rebel

    NEW DELHI : On top of revelations that the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) bought arms from the Tamil Tigers, a former ULFA leader now says the Assamese separatist group also got military training from the Sri Lankan rebels.Former ULFA spokesman Sunil Nath said that a small ULFA team from the northeast Indian border state went to Jaffna in Sri Lanka in the early 1990s when the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) controlled the northern peninsula.

  • Foreign & Local Delegations Visit Menik Farm IDP Relief Village

    A UNDP delegation headed by its Assistant Secretary General Mr. Ajay Chhibber visited Wanni to observe the plight in relief villages in Vavuniya on 12th November 2009. During their visit they talked to the people temporarily housed in the Menik Farm relief village and were highly satisfied with the facilities provided to the villagers. They also planted a tree sapling to mark their visit to the Menik Farm.

  • Defence Secretary Gives Away Deeds to War Heroes

    SECRETARY Defence Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa handed over deeds to war heroes, who were engaged in fierce battles during recently concluded humanitarian operations, today (17 Nov) in a special ceremony held at the Defence Ministry. Seventeen war heroes received deeds from the Secretary Defence including wife of late war hero Major SAAS Sakalasooriya. The original owner of the land was Mr. Wanigasooriya of Karagahamulla, Kadawatha, and it had been entrusted to the Public Trustee.

  • No More Security Clearance Needed for Colombo Bound Jaffna Passengers

    CIVILIANS in the Jaffna peninsula proceeding to the South (Colombo) are not required to receive security clearance from the Security Forces for their travel any longer on public buses, it was announced today (18th November 2009). Passengers on production of their National Identity Cards (NIC) or Sri Lankan passports, as is the practice in the rest of the island could travel on those public buses that have been provided with immediate effect.

  • Govt. Continues Rehabilitation of Ex-LTTE Combatants

    THE government has sought the assistance of UN agencies, International donors and local business community to rehabilitate over 11,000 ex-LTTE cadres, Commissioner General of Rehabilitation Major General Daya Ratnayake stated. The government rehabilitated a large number of ex-LTTE cadres who had surrendered themselves over past two years and most of them were sent abroad for employment after successful completion of vocational training programmes.   • Five More IDP Centres in Jaffna Closed Down as 2736 More Civilians Resettled


    AN ESTIMATED CROWD of 2736 displaced civilians, remained housed at four Jaffna based IDP Welfare Centres found way back to their original places of residence in Jaffna, Mannar and Vavuniya districts during past three days after Army troops facilitated their return under government’s “Northern Spring” (Uthuru Wasanthaya) programme.  Those people rescued from LTTE clutches during the height of humanitarian operations in Wanni were temporally sheltered in Gurunagar Welfare Centre.....
  • SLASC Boxers Emerge Champions

    THE Inter Regimental Boxing Meet of the Army was got underway at the Panagoda Army Cantonment gymnasium Friday (20) evening where a number of men and women’s events took place. Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya who himself is a boxer and a referee recognized at international panels was the chief guest for the occasion. Brigadier G.R.S. Dias, the President Sri Lanka Army Boxing Committee received the Army Commander on his arrival. Sri Lanka Army Services Corps emerged champions for the year 2009 scoring 36 points while the rival Gamunu Watch boxers ended up as runners-up scoring 22 points.

  • Troops Recover 1500 T-56 Ammo

    NORTH: CONTINUING search and clear operations conducted by the troops in VISUAMADU, AKKARAYANKULAM and PUTHUKKUDIYIRUPPU areas during Thursday (19), recovered one thousand and five hundred rounds of T-56 ammunition, two Outboard Motors (OBM), one claymore mine of 5 kg, one 60 mm mortar bomb, one hand grenade and seven anti personnel mines.

  • UN Under Secretary General Speaks to IDP in Manik Farm

    A DELEGATION of the United Nations headed by its Under Secretary General Sir John Holmes visited Vavuniya on 18th November 2009. During their visit, the delegation went to the Manik Farm Welfare Village and met patients, lying in hospital inside the village and also saw the exhibition of garments and handicrafts produced by the women living in the Manik Farm.  They also shared views with civilians in the Manik Farm Welfare Village.
