Five More IDP Centres in Jaffna Closed Down as 2736 More Civilians Resettled

AN ESTIMATED CROWD of 2736 displaced civilians, remained housed at four Jaffna based IDP Welfare Centres found way back to their original places of residence in Jaffna, Mannar and Vavuniya districts during past three days after Army troops facilitated their return under government’s “Northern Spring” (Uthuru Wasanthaya) programme.

Those people rescued from LTTE clutches during the height of humanitarian operations in Wanni were temporally sheltered in Gurunagar Welfare Centre, Kopai Welfare Centre, University Welfare Center at Kaithady and Children’s Welfare Center at Kaithady, Mirusuvil Welfare Centre and belonged to 957 families. Some of these people selected their places of resettlement in the Jaffna peninsula itself under fifteen Divisional secretariats.

Each family returning to those areas for residence is to receive the World Food Programme (WFP) supplied dry rations, sufficient for a six-month long period from respective WFP sub offices and state administrative units. In addition a total of Rs. 25,000/= is to be allocated for each family, of which some Rs. 20,000/= is deposited in Banks as savings. A stock of household items and clothes, termed as “Relief Package” was also given to each family returning for resettlement along with roofing sheets, if needed.

The latest batch of 456 IDPs from the Mirusuvil Welfare Centre left for resettlement on Wednesday (18) with the help of state authorities and the Security Forces. With the resettlement of those civilians, five more Welfare Centres in Jaffna for displaced people were closed down in the past 72 hours ending Thursday (19) morning.
