No More Security Clearance Needed for Colombo Bound Jaffna Passengers

CIVILIANS in the Jaffna peninsula proceeding to the South (Colombo) are not required to receive security clearance from the Security Forces for their travel any longer on public buses, it was announced today (18th November 2009).

Passengers on production of their National Identity Cards (NIC) or Sri Lankan passports, as is the practice in the rest of the island could travel on those public buses that have been provided with immediate effect. Passengers are able to board those buses leaving Jaffna Hospital Junction (51 Division Headquarters).

Earlier, except for emergencies, passengers bound for Colombo were required to obtain security clearance from respective Police Stations in their areas of residence due to security concerns.

Passengers starting off from Wellawatte and Kotahena in Colombo could also use the same service on their way back to the northern peninsula using the same facility. It is believed the dispensing of those restrictions would help intended passengers a great deal even at times of quick business undertakings, emergencies, etc.
