  • Under Uthuru Vasanthaya Program: De-mining Expedited

    THE Government has taken the initiative to import more de-mining machines to expedite the de-mining process in the North and to facilitate the speedy resettlement of the displaced civilians now living in welfare centres in the Menik Farm, sources from the Ministry of Nation Building told the Daily News yesterday.   • More Terrorist Items Recovered

    NORTH: TROOPS operating in the general areas of IRANAMADU, KATTUKULAM and PUTHUKUDDIYIRUPPU conducted search and clear operations in those areas on Friday (11) and recovered four hand grenades, seventeen Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG), one 81 mm mortar bomb, five LTTE photo albums, one LTTE Identity Card, one ATM card, one hundred and sixteen miscellaneous photos, twenty-six Tamil books and three Outboard Motors (OBM).  

  • Ex-Servicemen Offer Their Part to Disable Soldiers

    RETIRED soldiers who once contributed to the war continue to give their share even after retirement by way of donations of artificial limbs to appreciate the dedication of soldiers who sacrificed limbs for the sake of country’s territorial integrity. Sri Lanka Army Engineers’ Association (SLAEA) in collaboration with Sri Lanka Ex-servicemen’s Association (SLEA), in one of such praiseworthy acts, organized a donation of over one hundred artificial limbs to War Heroes who became disable due to terrorist attacks during recent humanitarian operations. A simple ceremony in this regard was held at the SLEA auditorium in Panagoda on 12th September morning with the participation of Senior Members of the SLEA and SLAEA including Patron of SLAEA Deshamanya General (Retd) Denis Perera and President SLEA General (Retd) Hamilton Wanasinghe.

    NORTH & EAST: ARMY troops continuing their search and clear operations in the general areas of ADAMPAN, VISUAMADU, ALANKULAM, PUTHUKKUDIYIRUPPU, VELLAMULLIVAIKKAL, SUGANDHIPURAM and KAPPUKULAM on Saturday (12) recovered three T-56 weapons, one T-56 magazine, twenty-one pistols, one detonator, one Arul bomb, one 60 mm mortar bomb, three hand grenades, thirty-nine anti personnel mines, one claymore mine, two Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG) with locally made parts, one PRC 1077 AC/DC Power Unit, one PRC 1090 PS Unit.....

    VALIANT soldiers eliminated brutal terrorism and safeguarded the sovereignty of the motherland through a three-decade long War. This historic victory over separatist terrorism paved the way for the building of a peaceful society in which people may live without fear and suspicion.   • Secretary Defence & Commander Speak to Troops in former Tiger Dens

    TROOPS who served with the utmost dedication and sacrifice in Mullaittivu during the peak of Wanni humanitarian operations were commended and appreciated by Secretary Defence Dr. Gotabaya Rajapakse when he met a section of the troops during a visit on Friday (11). Secretary Defence, accompanied by Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya as the first leg of the tour flew to Security Forces Headquarters Mullaittivu (SFHQ-MLT).  The visiting Secretary Defence and the Commander of the Army    were received by the Commander SFHQ-(MLT) Major General Nandana Udawatte on arrival at the venue. 

  • Resettlement of IDPs: West of A9 first - 14,000 acres ready to receive civilians by end Oct.

    THE government is planning to resettle as many internally displaced persons as possible in the area west of the A9 before tackling resettlement in the Vanni east. The army is of the opinion that all its efforts should be directed at clearing the western part of the Vanni in keeping with the original plan, though some have called for simultaneous resettlement of the displaced on both sides of the A9. Northern Province Governor Major General (retd) G. A. Chandrasiri yesterday said that the army and five demining agencies had been engaged in mine clearing operations in the Yodawewa area.

  • Dayaka Saba & Sugathi Gamini Members Offer Scholarships to Tri-Service Children

    SRI Sugathi Gamini Association at Mettarama Temple, Bambalapitiya was the latest to offer scholarships to the children of departed War Heroes due to terrorist attacks. The ceremony was held at the temple premises on 4th September 2009, Binara Poya day. Twenty children from Army families 15 children from sailor families and 15 children from Air Force families whose breadwinners have made the supreme sacrifice on behalf of the country were among the recipients.

    NORTH & EAST: ARMY troops engaged in  search and clear operations in the general areas of VISUAMADU, KOKAVIL, PUTHUKKUDDIYIRUPPU, MULLAITTIVU, SUGANDIPURAM and KAPPUKULAM recovered nineteen  hand grenades, one anti personnel mine, two M-16 weapons, ten M-16 magazines, forty-five rounds of 5.56 ammunition, five Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG), two T-56 magazines, one hundred    rounds of T-56 ammunition, one thousand three hundred and forty-four electric detonators, eleven claymore mines, three claymore plates, nineteen suicide bombs, fifty-seven suicide jackets, four thousand four hundred and nine 9 mm pistol rounds,  ten thousand and five hundred non electric detonators, six claymore circuits,  thirty slabs of TNT explosives,........
