Secretary Defence &;amp; Commander Speak to Troops in former Tiger Dens

TROOPS who served with the utmost dedication and sacrifice in Mullaittivu during the peak of Wanni humanitarian operations were commended and appreciated by Secretary Defence Dr. Gotabaya Rajapakse when he met a section of the troops during a visit on Friday (11).     

Secretary Defence, accompanied by Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya as the first leg of the tour flew to Security Forces Headquarters Mullaittivu (SFHQ-MLT).  The visiting Secretary Defence and the Commander of the Army    were received by the Commander SFHQ-(MLT) Major General Nandana Udawatte on arrival at the venue. 

The visiting Secretary was accorded a Guard of Honour at the SFHQ premises where he met a section of the senior Army Officers present at the venue. To get a first-hand account on ongoing de-mining and clearing operations being pursued presently by soldiers, Dr. Rajapakse made a tour to the  former LTTE stronghold, Puthukkudiyirippu where he took the salute of a Guard of Honour, accorded by the 4th Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (4 VIR) troops serving there.

While extending his appreciation on the commitment of the troops during the Wanni Humanitarian War, Secretary Defence stressed the importance of the accelerated de-mining programmes and clearing operations before civilians are re-settled in those areas. Dr. Gotabaya Rajapakse who also conveyed the best wishes of HE the President on his behalf reminded that troops could gain a greater victory through dedication and sacrifice. He also assured that welfare of the war heroes will continue to swell in the future too.  

They visited the Jordanian “Farah-III” cargo ship captured and partly destroyed by terrorists. He also received an account of how terrorists used the ship for attacks against troops. 

Secretary Defence spoke to Officers and Other Ranks in Mullaittivu and further instructed them on security measures. It was followed by Secretary’s visit to the Mullaittivu Base hospital and the Task Force -2 at Oddusudan.

Commander SFHQ-Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN) Major General Athula Jayawardene, General Officer Commanding 53 Division Major General Chargie Gallage, and Commanders of Task Forces and Units serving in the area were present on the occasion.
