  • Nalandians Felicitate War Heroes

    CONTEMPORARY War Heroes, nurtured by the Nalanda College, Colombo who made the supreme sacrifice or became disable during the war fought for the sake of territorial integrity of the motherland, were felicitated in a glittering  ceremony organized by the Junior Old Boys of the College on Sunday (02). The ceremony that honoured forty-one old Nalandians killed in the war and eight others injured in the war commenced after the Chief Guest Secretary Defence Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, accompanied by other distinguished guests paid floral tributes to the War Memorial in the school premises.

  • All Police Stations & Catholic Churches to Issue Entry Forms to Madhu

    DEVOTEES wishing to attend the annual Madhu festival-2009 are requested to fill a special form, obtainable from all island-wide Police stations and Catholic Churches and hand them over to Security Forces personnel on duty when entering the Madhu area. This measure will help Security Forces identify those entering the area as part of the security precautions.

  • Jaffna - Colombo Public Bus Service Begins

    THE Jaffna - Colombo public transportation bus service commenced yesterday with 175 passengers boarding four SLTB buses for the first leg of the journey which is from Jaffna to Medawachchiya. The Government Information Department, quoting Northern Province Governor Major General G. A. Chandrasiri said the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) had initially deployed four buses with more buses to be added to the fleet shortly.

  • Lak Sathosa in Jaffna, a dream come true - Minister Douglas Devananda

    A BRANCH of a Lak Sathosa was opened in Jaffna on July 28, by Social Services and Social Welfare Minister Douglas Devananda, and Trade, Marketing Development, Co-operatives and Consumer Services Minister Bandula Gunawardana. Devananda said he untiringly made every endeavour for making available the essential and other commodities at a price in a par with the Colombo prices and that his long cherished dream has now come true, through the opening of a Lak Sathosa outlet.

  • Tight Security During the Feast of Our Lady of Madhu

    GOVERNMENT authorities have assured the security for the pilgrims arriving for the feast of the Shrine of Our Lady of Madhu as the army and Police have adopted stringent measures to enable pilgrims to pay homage to the Sacred Shrine without fear. The Northern Province Governor Major General G.A. Chandrasiri, who visited the Madhu Shrine premises on Saturday said that the identity of pilgrims arriving for the festival need to be established through a normal procedure of filling a form which had already been dispatched to all police stations.

  • Kokavil TV Transmission Tower is to Resurrect

    NEARLY after twenty years, the famous Kokavil TV transmission tower is to be re-established covering the entire northern and Wanni regions, authorities told the www.army.lk. With the support received from the Army, Engineers in the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation has organized the inaugural work to begin shortly. The new tower of 172 meters high and equipped to beam to an area of 75 km radius is prepared to serve the most modern technological needs that match with those at international level. Spectators in the entire Jaffna peninsula, Mannar area and Welioya area to the East are to receive benefit from the new tower.   

  • Commander Calls on Premier & President's Secretary

    COMMANDER of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya this morning (03) paid two courtesy calls in conformity with military traditions after he took office as Commander of the Army. The first visit was to the Secretary to the President, Lalith Weerathunga at the Presidential Secretariat. Mr. Lalith Weeratunge, himself a distinguished career administrator welcomed the visiting Army Chief on arrival at the Secretariat after offering him a warm handshake. Both of them exchanged matters of mutual interest and views on security concerns during the brief meeting.

  • Kotelawala Defence University to Award Medical Degrees

    GENERAL Sir John Kotalawala Defence University (KDU), Ratmalana, marking a milestone in its academia is to commence an MBBS degree programme shortly. The new MBBS degree programme, in affiliation with a government university is to call   for applications for the academic year 2008/2009 before 12th August 2009. KDU’s vice chancellor in consultation with directors in academic circles has managed to introduce this praiseworthy stream of studies to the KDU.

  • More Items Found from Mannar & Mullaittivu

    WANNI: SEARCH and clear operations continued in the general areas of WELIKANDAL and PUTHUKKUDIYIRUPPU on Monday (03). During those search operations, troops found sixty-three anti personnel mines, ten claymore mines of 10 kg each, seventy-six claymore mines of 5kg each, twenty small claymore mines, three thousand rounds of T-56 ammunition, five T-56 magazines, ten Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG), thirteen RPG heat bombs, one Outboard Motor, two hundred and thirty-seven propellers with seven wings, twelve 60 mm mortar bombs, fourteen 82 mm mortar bombs and five hand grenades.

  • Felicitation of Two Royal Commanders

    ROYAL College Colombo will felicitate two of its distinguished sons today on the 04th of August 2009.The 19th Commander of the Sri Lanka Army Lt.Gen. Jagath Jayasuriya, USP, ndu, psc  & the 16th Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe, RSP, VSV, USP, ndc, psc, DISS ,two finest products of  Royal College , who passed out from this hallowed institution in 1977 & 1973 respectively will be felicitated by the Royal community. The two commanders are to be received by the cadet band and escorted in procession up to the Royal College War Memorial. The commanders will offer floral tributes at the war memorial in remembrance of the fallen Royalists, who laid down their lives in the battle to protect the sovereignty & the territorial integrity of Sri Lanka.
