    FIFTEEN-YEAR-OLD Amuthavasagam Lourthamma is one of the 94 inmates at the state-run rehabilitation centre for LTTE child.soldiers who have either surrendered or been captured, which is located at Ambepussa, about 70 km on the Colombo-Kandy road, There are 44 girls on the rolls here, and what is special about Lourthamma is that her brother, older by just a year, is also there for rehab.   • Searches Continue: Heavy Claymores & Explosives Uncovered

    WANNI: TROOPS recovered four 81 mm mortar bombs, one GPMG weapon, one T-56 weapon, three Rocket Propelled Grenades and thirteen hand grenades from the general areas of PULIYANPOKKANEI and VISUAMADU on Sunday (21). In a separate search and clear operation, troops recovered five anti personnel mines, fifty-eight T-56 ammunition rounds, three 81 mm mortar bombs, four hand grenades from the general areas of UDAYARKATTUKULAM, ALANKULAM, AMPAKAMAM and OLUMADU. 

  • Tenth UN Peace Keeping Contingent to Leave Soon

    PASSING-out parade of the tenth Sri Lankan Army contingent, designed to serve in Haiti on UN Peace Keeping mission was held at Army Cantonment in Panagoda on Saturday (20). The main composition consisted of Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) troops while a few service personnel from service and support arms also would leave for Haiti with them. A total of fifty two Officers and six hundred and ninety seven Other Ranks are to take over duties from Gajaba Regiment (GR) troops presently performing duties in Haiti.

  • Reps Learn of Army De-mining Work in Mannar

    A THREE-member team of the JIKA organization, collectively responsible for construction of the bridge that connects Mannar town and restoration of Nanandan, Palampiddi and Pandivirichchan tanks with the coordination of government’s  “Uthuru Wasanthaya” project met Major General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander Security Forces Wanni with the intention of reviewing the progress, hitherto made by Army de-mining teams in above areas.

  • Items Used in Former LTTE Swarnam's Office Complex Unearthed

    EAST: A STOCK of accessories to arms and ammunition, kept buried in PUCHCHANKERNI, VAKARAI in the East, were unearthed by the troops Sunday (21) afternoon while they were conducting a search and clear operation. An informant has alerted the troops on the hideout following information received earlier. The unearthing took place around 6.45 p.m. on Sunday (21).

  • Explosive Devices & Accessories Found

    EAST: ARMY troops on search and clear operations in the general areas of UPPUWELI in TRINCOMALEE and KARUWALAKODDI in BATTICALOA recovered one 3 kg claymore mine, 500 g of C-4 explosives, one detonator code of 50 m, eighty-eight 82 mm mortar bombs and twenty-seven hand grenades on Monday (22). In the meantime, troops on continuous search and clear operations in WANNI areas recovered some more LTTE stocks of weaponry hidden in different locations on Monday (22).

  • TNA MP With Tiger Links Detained

    THE Criminal Investigations Department (CID) conducting investigations into LTTE activities, yesterday (22) produced Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Vanni District MP Sathasivam Kanagaratnam before the Colombo Chief Magistrate and Additional District Judge Nisantha Hapuarachchi and said the MP is alleged to have violated the Emergency Regulations and assisted the LTTE. Kanagaratnam was arrested by the CID while he was with the people who came from the uncleared areas. He was trapped in Mullaitivu for several months. The CID has commenced an investigation against the MP who is alleged to have been involved with LTTE terrorist activities under the detention orders issued on May 21 by Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

  • 12 Claymores, 53 APMs Unearthed

    EAST: ON information received by the Police, a joint Army and Police team conducted a snap search operation in VERUGAL, BATTICALOA and recovered a stock of military items including twelve claymore mines, fifty-three anti personnel mines (APM), one pressure mine, twenty-four detonators and three wire rolls on Tuesday (23) around 11.30 a.m. Meanwhile, Army troops with a special team of Police conducted a joint search operation in UPPUWELI, TRINCOMALEE between 9.00 a.m. and 3.50 p.m.
