    Island-wide Army troops and Seva Vanitha clubs in the Army actively contributed to the conduct of the just-concluded Sri Sambuddhatva Jayanthi celebrations and Vesak Full Moon Poya through varieties of programmes. The Seva Vanitha Unit of the Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (10 Support) Regiment, inviting relatives of married and unmarried soldiers, organized a special Bodhi Pooja pinkama at Kalubowila Sri Sunandarama temple.

  • GW Field Shooters & Football Players Recognized


    Award of colours and certificates to Gemunu Watch soldiers excelled in field firing in the Army Inter Regiment Field Firing Tournament and football (2010-2011) took place recently at Kuruwita Gemunu Watch Regimental Headquarters. Gemunu Watch shooters (open / novice), possessing the unbroken Championship record for seven consecutive years received their trophy and certificates from the Chief Guest Major General S. Udumalagala, Colonel of the Regiment and Quarter Master General on the occasion.

  • Expat Lankans Demand Moon Discard 'Darusman Report'


    A large group of Sri Lankan expatriates residing in Switzerland, France, Italy, UK and other European countries recently conducted a protest in Geneva to pressure the UNSG Ban ki-Moon to discard the controversial ‘Darusman report’ which dealt with accountability issues in Sri Lanka. Switzerland based Eric Makawitage told The Island that over 2,000 Sri Lankans participated in the demonstration.

    Major General (Retd) Ashok Metha of the Indian Army, accompanied by a team of New Delhi’s Central Security Committee members and two experts on international terrorism, Prof David Kilcullen and Prof Rohan Gunaratna, all of who attended the just concluded international seminar, ‘Defeating Terrorism-The Sri Lankan Experience’, separately visited Poonthottam Rehabilitation Centre for ex-LTTE combatants, Menik Farm Relief village, De-mining sites and resettled areas with   a view to observing ground realities.

    211 Brigade in Vavuniya serving the Security Forces Headquarters, Wanni with the support of medical and nursing staff at Vavuniya Base Hospital, conducted a blood donation campaign on account of the Poson Full Moon Poya Day.   • Information Leads to Recovery of 13 T-56 Weapons, Ammunition & Paraphernalia

    Two large caches of LTTE arms and ammunition, micro pistols and other paraphernalia, kept buried under concrete pits in Kovilkulam and Samanalankulam in Vavuniya before LTTE terrorism was eliminated were found by troops during the weekend following tips-off received by Military Intelligence Corps. Those recoveries, neatly concealed and kept packed in three plastic barrels.....
