Defence Attaches Receive First-Hand Account in Jaffna

A sixteen-member team of India-based Defence Attachés (DAs) from Czech Republic, Ukraine, Kenya, Tanzania, Poland, Oman, Nigeria, Maldives, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Ghana, China, Japan, India, the Philippines and Sri Lanka after attending the recent seminar, ‘Defeating Terrorism - The Sri Lankan Experience’ in Colombo took time off to receive a first-hand experience during a tour to Jaffna peninsula.  

At the outset of the day’s itinerary, those visiting defence officials of tri-services received a comprehensive account on post-war Jaffna and its ongoing associated development work after culmination of the LTTE violence from Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Commander Security Forces, Jaffna.

During introductory remarks, he elaborated on measures that have been put in practice in order to have closer links with ordinary denizens in the peninsula. Explanations clarified how the troops in coordination with state and other authorities are in the process of carrying out projects such as income generation, self help earning, housing, resettlement, de-mining, constructions, health clinics, sports events, educational programmes, welfare measures, etc. Those visiting officials exchanged views with the Jaffna Commander on various aspects of interest to them before they started off their tour across Jaffna and its suburbs.        

Progress made in the field of de-mining, reconstruction, infrastructure-building, commercial activities after restoring normalcy in the entire peninsula came in for praise as they had freedom to interact with ordinary civilians in the heart of Jaffna town.  

They also visited the Jaffna Public Library, old Dutch Fort and the famous Nallur temple, and other areas and saw for themselves various development work in progress at socio-economic and cultural sphere.
