  • US Government Urges Investment in Lanka

    THE US Government is encouraging US companies and financiers to “Make Sri Lanka Your Next Business Stop.” The US Trade Representative and US Commerce Department have announced an October 13 and 14 conference in Colombo for U.S. investors interested in Sri Lanka. “This private-public conference will provide US firms a unique opportunity to be among the first investors in the newly opened regions of Sri Lanka’s Northern and Eastern Provinces,” the US Government’s export promotion and finance internet portal said.

  • CDS & Army Commander Visit Jaffna

    CHIEF of Defence Staff (CDS) General Sarath Fonseka together with Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya and a few senior officers from Army Headquarters flew to Jaffna on Saturday (15) for a visit. CDS and Army Commander arrived in Palaly in the morning were received by Commander Security Forces Headquarters-Jaffna (SFHQ-J) Major General G.P.R. de Silva. On arrival, troops of 11th Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment accorded a Guard of Honour to the CDS who was on his first visit to Jaffna after assuming the office of CDS.

  • Late Commander's Funeral Held with Full Military Honours

    THE funeral of former Commander of the Army General Nalin Seneviratne VSV ndc took place with full military honours at Borella General Cemetery Saturday (15) evening. The cortege reached the cemetery entrance around 3.30 p.m. and was taken to the crematorium by soldiers of the Engineers Regiment. Message of His Excellency, the President and Part I Order issued by Commander of the Army, according to military traditions were read out at the funeral before the coffin was placed in the crematorium amidst the Army gun salute.

  • More Displaced Go Back to Their Original Homes

    COMPLETING another phase of resettling IDPs (Internally Displaced Persons), civil administrative authorities in the east resettled two hundred and ninety eight families in their own villages recently. Those families were initially registered and then sent to their former living places after a lapse of three years.   • Governor Reunites Family

    NORTHERN Governor Major General G.A. Chandrasiri took immediate steps to reunite a 1 1/2 year old baby girl Mythili and her nine year old brother Subashwaran with their parents at the Cheddikulam Welfare Camp for the displaced people in Vavuniya. These two kids were found left alone at the Chavakachcheri General Hospital. Mythili was sent to this hospital as she needed medical treatment when her family and many more people were rescued by the Sri Lanka Army from the clutches of the LTTE during the humanitarian operation, a few month ago.

  • Northern Governor Reviews Development Work in Jaffna

    GOVERNOR of the Northern Province Major General (Retd) G.A. Chandrasiri made an official visit to Jaffna Peninsula on 12th August 2009 to assess the progress of development work being carried out in the respective areas under “Uthuru Wasanthaya”. During the visit, he met administrative and military officials at Jaffna Public Library to review the progress. Governor also participated in a simple ceremony organized at Duraiappa ground to mark the dispatch of first consignment of fish from Jaffna. The consignment was sent to Colombo along the A-9 in five freezer containers.

  • Japanese Ambassador Calls on Army Commander

    JAPANESE Ambassador in Sri Lanka Mr. Kunio Takahashi made a courtesy call on Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya at his office in Army Headquarters, Colombo Monday (17) morning. The visiting diplomat first conveyed his well wishes to the Commander on his accession to the highest chair of Sri Lanka Army and then had conversation with Army Commander on matters of bilateral interest. Before leaving Army Headquarters, Japanese Ambassador exchanged mementoes with Lt. Gen. Jayasuriya and signed the Visitors’ Book.

  • Seva Vanitha Army Branch Receives More Donations for War Heroes

    SRI LANKAN employees serving in the Arab Engineering Bureau in Doha Qatar recently donated a sum of Rs.800, 000/= to the Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB). Mr. Dayapriya Bandara Nawaratne, Mr. Thilina Samantha Wasana and Mr. Toyal Kumara representing donors handed over the cheque to   President SVAB Mrs. Manjulika Jayasuriya at the Seva Vanitha Office, Army Headquarters. Money will be used to purchase artificial limbs for War Heroes who had sacrificed their limbs during the recent humanitarian operations. 

  • IDPs in Sri Lanka: As the Three of Us Saw it on 16 July 2009

    THE three of us* arrived in Colombo on 14th July 2009 (Tuesday) and were scheduled to travel and visit the orphans at the IDP (Internally Displaced Per-sons) centres in the North-ern district of Vavuniya. Genocide, abuse and as-saults, assassinations, hun-ger, malnutrition, mutilated bodies, continuous cries from children, hunger, an-ger and rage were some of the thoughts that filled our minds before the trip. These disturbing thoughts and images were com-monly discussed and high-lighted in the international press and media, through the internet, at functions, and other avenues, all over the world. We were mentally prepared to encounter the after-effects of a post-conflict crisis.

  • Curfew in Jaffna Completely lifted for Nallur Festival

    JAFFNA: SECURITY Forces in Jaffna, considering the mammoth crowd of devotees flocking to the annual ongoing Nallur Kovil festival in JAFFNA completely lifted curfew hours that was in force between 12 midnight and 4.00 a.m. in the JAFFNA peninsula beginning Tuesday (18) evening. This is the first time in recent years the Security Forces completely lifted the curfew hours in the peninsula.
