Northern Governor Reviews Development Work in Jaffna

GOVERNOR of the Northern Province Major General (Retd) G.A. Chandrasiri made an official visit to Jaffna Peninsula on 12th August 2009 to assess the progress of development work being carried out in the respective areas under “Uthuru Wasanthaya”. 

During the visit, he met administrative and military officials at Jaffna Public Library to review the progress. 


Governor also participated in a simple ceremony organized at Duraiappa ground to mark the dispatch of first consignment of fish from Jaffna. The consignment was sent to Colombo along the A-9 in five freezer containers. Hon. Minister of Social Services Mr. Douglas Dewananda, Parliamentarians and representatives from fishing communities were present on the occasion. 

Meanwhile, transport facilities were arranged for 150 Catholic devotees from Jaffna to attend annual festival at the Holy Madhu church in Mannar. They were taken to Madhu in three state-owned (Sri Lanka Central Transport Board) busses with Army protection. The three busses left Jaffna Sinhala Maha Vidyala on 13th August. 


In the meantime, a “Shramadana” campaign was organized by 11th and 12th Vijayabahu Infantry Regiments deployed under 523 Brigade at two Hindu Kovils in Sarasalai and Kovilkandi, Jaffna recently. The two Kovil premises were cleaned and necessary renovations on Kovil buildings were attended to.    

At the same time, 524 Brigade organized a friendly match between the cricket teams of Anuradhapura Vidyalaya and Point-Pedro Hardly Vidyalaya at Hardly grounds on 5th August. At the end of the match, 524 Brigade arranged a musical evening and dinner for the two teams.
