  • Ambalangoda Hails Army Commander

    ARMY COMMANDER General Sarath Fonseka was felicitated by the people at his home town, Ambalangoda and teachers and students of his alma mater “Dharmasoka College” – Ambalangoda during a ceremony on Friday (10). The felicitation at Dharmasoka College included a Guard of Honour accorded to the Army Commander by Cadets at Dharmasoka and presentation of mementoes to the Commander. Addressing the students, Commander recollected his school time memories at Dharmasoka College. The ceremony was attended by the teachers, students and old boys.

  • Madhu Feast on a Grand Scale in August

    ALL plans are afoot to hold the annual feast of Our Lady of Madhu on a grand scale from August 6, with Senior Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa MP, personally monitoring the arrangements for the convenience of pilgrims. A discussion was held at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday chaired by Basil Rajapaksa MP with the participation of the Catholic clergy and Government officials involved in facilitating the Feast through various channels to evaluate the progress of the preparations for the occasion. MP Rajapaksa instructed officials to finalise all pre-arrangements by the end of this month, including the upgrading of infrastructure facilities with the provision of other amenities to cater to the large number of devotees expected at this year’s feast.

  • Army Troops in Batticaloa Unearth 120 mm Mortar Launcher

    EAST: AS MORE and more LTTE items emerge from the WANNI jungles, troops serving in the east are continuing their search operations in the areas where LTTE terrorists earlier dominated. Army troops on recent most search and clear operation in the general area of ANGODAVILLU in BATTICALOA were able to recover one 120 mm mortar launcher sans sight, one aiming picket and one toolkit. The weapon and accessories found on Friday (10) had been wrapped in polythene and buried under soil.

  • Twins & Four Brothers in three Families Join Army

    THE ISLAND’S history, records many occasions where members of the same family joined the Armies to protect the country when the need demanded patriotic countrymen to go to the battlefield during invasions or other threats. Some brave youths, even in the recent past never missed that opportunity and made their contributions to serve the country through soldiering. Three such instances came to limelight at the recent passing out parade of Officer Cadets at the Sri Lanka Military Academy (SLMA) in Diyatalawa when it was revealed that six brothers including twins were commissioned as Second Lieutenants in the Sri Lanka Army.

  • T-56 Weapons & Cyanide Capsules Found

    VAVUNIYA : TROOPS on search and clear operations recovered four T-56 weapons, four T-56 magazines, one hundred and fifty rounds of T-56 ammunition, one 40 mm Grenade Launcher, twelve 40 mm Grenade Launchers, two cyanide capsules, four hand grenades, one mobile phone, two field dressing,  one area map, three batteries, three packs and some stationery from ECHCHANKULAM area.

  • One More 130 mm Artillery Gun of LTTE Unearthed

    MULLAITTIVU: INFORMATION provided by an informant in custody led the troops to recover one more 130 mm artillery gun from UDAYARKATTU area on Friday (10). As in many other instances, the gun and its accessories including wheels were found buried during a search operation in the area. All parts had been safely packed by the LTTE terrorists in an iron box of 43 ft in length, 4 ft in width and 2 ½ ft in height making it usable on later occasions if chances were found.

  • Army Denies Media Report on Removal of Patients during Visits of VIPs

    DURING the recent WANNI humanitarian operation that ended on 19th May inflicting a crushing defeat to the LTTE with its leaders killed by the Army, many Army soldiers were injured in confrontations as well as clearing operations. Minor injuries were attended to at field hospital level while others who needed further treatments and urgent surgeries were brought down to Colombo. As the casualty figure rose due to intensified battles, Army hospital sought the assistance of other hospitals such as Kalubovila, Jayawardanepura and the National Hospital which acceded the Army hospital’s request on priority basis since all could not be accommodated in the Army hospital.

  • Army Guns Boom in Second Half to Down Navy 25-13

    ARMY staved off a red hot challenge from Navy in the second half to win their Caltex A Division second round rugby game at 25-13 at Longden Place Friday (10). Army led 8-6 at the breather but the sailors put in all they had and for a brief period led 13-11 in the second half until the soldiers took control to win the game by two goals, 2 penalties and a try to two penalties and a goal by the sailors.

  • 1,000 IDP Candidates Among Others: Forty-two Ex LTTEers to Sit A/L Examination

    THE DEPARTMENT OF EXAMINATIONS will issue special Identity Cards for over 1,000 displaced candidates at the Vavuniya and Chettikulam IDP centres to facilitate them to sit the August 8 GCE(AL) examination.This number includes 42 former LTTE cadres and the ICs will be issued as a special arrangement considering the unusual circumstances under which the candidates are sitting the examination, Commissioner General of Examinations Anura Edirisinghe told the Sunday Observer.
