  • North to Get 21 Police Stations

    AS PART OF ESTABLISHING civil administration in the North after eradicating terrorism, the Police Department is to set up 21 police stations in the North and a Tamil language training centre for police personnel in Kilinochchi. Addressing the media at the Police Headquarters yesterday, IGP Jayantha Wickramaratne said after eliminating terrorism from the country after three decades, particularly in the North, it is important to establish civil administration in the liberated areas. A Tamil Language Training Centre will be established in Kilinochchi in addition to the existing one in Kalladi. He said a Tamil Language Training Centre (TLTC) will be established in Kilinochchi in addition to the existing TLTC in Kalladi.

  • Six Absconding Tigers Surrender & Lead Army to Unearth Their Weapons

    VAVUNIYA: SIX Tiger cadres who had surrendered to the Special Task Force Police post at VARIKUTTUR, VAVUNIYA west have led the Police to unearth a stock of LTTE arms and ammunition that had been kept buried several months ago in the same area on the road to MANNAR. Three female and three male Tigers who had been allegedly moving about in VAVUNIYA area for sometime while resorting to LTTE violence in the past had finally made up their minds to surrender to the troops in VAVUNIYA Tuesday (9) morning. 

  • Recoveries Continued to be Made

    MULLAITTIVU: ARMY troops for another day on Tuesday (9) expanded their search and clear operations in MULLIYAVELI and PUTHUKKUDIYIRUPPU areas and uncovered nine pistols with one magazine, eight pistol ammunition rounds, three T-56 weapons, four T-56 magazines, three 60 mm mortar bombs, two Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG), four hand grenades, two 120 mm mortar bombs, two I-com sets and  twenty-seven anti personnel mines.

    FAMILY members of fallen War Heroes from Kegalle district had the rare opportunity of meeting Secretary Defence Gotabaya Rajapaksa and sharing their concerns with him, as part of an island-wide Ranaviru welfare programme, spearheaded by Ranaviru Seva Authority (RSA), in cooperation with Ministry of Defence (MoD).   • Children Receive Gifts on Poson Day

    ARMY troops of 234 Brigade in Punani, Kallady on account of Poson Poya Day visited children orphanages in the area and distributed food and clothes among the inmates. Children in Unnachchimunai and Kallady children’s homes were delighted and excited to receive military guests with gift parcels on that day. An initiative taken by the troops as part of their civil coordination work enabled the officers to visit those children. Senior Army officers and several representatives from the civil sector supported the donation.

  • Two New SF Headquarters Become Operational

    COLOMBO: THE TWO new MULLAITTIVU and KILINOCHCHI Security Forces Headquarters, established by Sri Lanka Army on the instructions of Commander of the Army General SARATH FONSEKA, came into operation with effect from 5th June 2009, the Army Headquarters declared. Major General CHANNA GUNATHILAKA has been appointed General Officer Commanding (GOC) for Security Forces Headquarters, KILINOCHCHI SFHQ (KLN) and Major General NANDANA UDAWATTE has been appointed General Officer Commanding (GOC) for Security Forces Headquarters, MULLAITTIVU SFHQ (MLT), both under command to Army Headquarters.

  • Troops Expand Their Search

    WANNI: EXTENSIVE search operations that covered MURUSIMUDE and POONERYN areas in MULLAITTIVU and KILINOCHCHI districts were continued by Army troops for another day throughout Wednesday (10). Troops also conducted searches in RUGAM, AMPARA area during Wednesday (10). All those search operations collected one T-56 weapon, one T-56 magazine, one micro pistol, two 9 mm pistols, one booby trap, two claymore mines, one T-56 weapon, two T-56 magazines, sixty T-56 ammunition rounds, eighteen anti personnel mines and dry rations worth about Rs. 150, 000.

  • Return of Internally Displaced Persons: UNHCR Commends Govt's Good Practices

    UN Refugee Agency UNHCR yesterday welcomed Government's good practices in resettling IDPs in Musali Division and pledged its committment to providing support to the Government with future IDP returns in the North and East. "In the context of return to Musali, the Government has applied good practices in IDP return such as certified mine clearance prior to return, go and see visits, provided transport for returnees and their belongings, and coordinated a return assistance package including food, shelter assistance and essential non-food items.

  • -œPrabhakaran was an Obstacle to Tamils- ; Path Now Clear to Address Tamil Grievances- Devananda

     VELUPILLAI PRABHAKARAN was an "obstacle" for the future of Tamils in Sri Lanka and with his death the road is now clear for the government to address the "genuine political" grievances of the community by devolving powers to northern region, a senior Tamil leader said on Tuesday.Minister of Social Services and Social Welfare K N Douglas Devananda said the government should now hasten the process of resolving the decades-old ethnic conflict by implementing the 13th amendment under the Indo-Sri Lanka Accord of 1987 in full. "Prabhakaran was an obstacle for the Tamil people. He missed many golden opportunities to join the mainstream. With that obstacle no more, the path is now clear for us to address the problems of the people. We should quicken the process as we have no excuses now," he told visiting Indian journalists. 53-year-old Devananda, who survived 13 assassination attempts by the LTTE..........

  • Uthuru Mituru Programme Set to Reconstruct Northern Railway

    THE reconstruction of the damaged railway stations beyond Vavuniya has been undertaken by President Mahinda Rajapaksa and several other ministers under the government’s ‘Uthuru Mituru’ programme on a request by Transport Minister Dulles Alahapperuma, Commercial Manager of the Sri Lanka Railways (SLR), Vijaya Samarasingha said.The railway track and all 30 stations beyond Vavuniya upto KKS had been totally damaged and the track was not in use for the past 25 years. The SLR had estimated that Rs. 14 billion is needed to run a train up to KKS from Vavuniya, he said.
