FAMILY members of fallen War Heroes from Kegalle district had the rare opportunity of meeting Secretary Defence Gotabaya Rajapaksa and sharing their concerns with him, as part of an island-wide Ranaviru welfare programme, spearheaded by Ranaviru Seva Authority (RSA), in cooperation with Ministry of Defence (MoD).
The fifteenth round of the project got underway at Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) Headquarters at Ambepussa on Tuesday (09) where hundreds of spouses and family members of fallen War Heroes presented their problems, still remaining unresolved after loss of their beloved ones.
Chairman RSA Major General (Retd) Palitha Fernando during the opening address outlined measures that have already been taken so far to assist Ranaviru families, particularly in relation to purchase of lands for them, construction of houses, receipt of scholarships for their children, etc. He also announced that the RSA has also launched a separate training programme to improve skills of differently-able soldiers both working and non-working.
Secretary Defence in his address to the gathering reiterated that the purpose of this ongoing scheme was to listen directly to family members of War Heroes with a view to obtaining first hand accounts, related to realities at their home fronts and exploring possibilities for resolution of respective issues then and there. Mr. Rajapaksa took time off to speak to Ranaviru families separately and paid his gratitude to parents and spouses who allowed their loved ones to fight for the country.
President, MoD Seva Vanitha Branch Mrs. Ioma Rajapaksa, Divisional Secretary for Kegalle, Mrs. Prema Dissanayake, Adjutant General Major General Jayanath Perera, Commandant SLSR Regimental Headquarters Brigadier P.C. Keppetiwalana, senior Police officers, administrators and a few more invitees were present during the day’s programme.
Members of Armed Forces and Police attended the occasion.
