  • LTTE Mines & Booby Traps Unearthed

    NORTH & EAST: TROOPS during search and clear operations in the general areas of AKKARAYANKULAM, UPPUKULAM, VISUAMADU, PUTHUKKUDDIYIRUPPU and SUGANDIPURAM recovered two 120 mm mortar bombs, five T-56 weapons, seven hundred and twenty rounds of T-56 ammunition, seven T-56 magazines, twenty hand grenades, one I-com set, two belts, four jackets, nineteen anti personnel mines, one Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG), two claymore mines, eight 60 mm mortar bombs, one 80 mm mortar bomb, four 82 mm mortar bombs and one booby trap on Thursday (17). 

  • COUNTDOWN BEGINS TO THE ARMY 60TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

    THE inaugural announcement in connection with the forthcoming Army 60th Anniversary celebrations on the theme “Victory Through Commitment, Dedication, Sacrifice & Professionalism” was made this morning (18) at Army Headquarters by Chief of Staff Major General Mendaka Samarasinghe and the Steering Committee of the 60th Anniversary Celebrations.  Major General Samarasinghe who is also the Chairman, Steering Committee of the 60th Anniversary Celebrations briefed the media on the sequence of elaborate and multifarious    arrangements in progress giving.....

  • SCHOOL STUDENTS RECEIVE CONCESSIONS FOR ARMY EXHIBITION

    STUDENTS in island-wide government schools are to receive concessionary rates for entry into the forthcoming Army 60th Anniversary Exhibition at BMICH premises beginning 3rd October 2009, it was announced Friday (18) at the Army Headquarters during a media briefing, headed by Army Chief of Staff Major General Mendaka Samarasinghe. An entry ticket for this Exhibition of educational importance too is priced at Rs.50/= but entry tickets for students are priced at Rs.25/= (half of the price). Requests for these concessions can be made to the Army Headquarters through respective schools.

  • SPECIAL BUSES FOR ARMY EXHIBITION & TATTOO

    MINISTRY of Transport at the request of Sri Lanka Army has agreed to run special bus services for convenience of the public who would be attending the Army Exhibition at BMICH (Oct 3-7) and the Army Tattoo (Oct 17-23) at Kettarama Stadium. The Army Exhibition beginning at 10.00 a.m. (except on the opening day) is open till 10.00 p.m. on all seven days and expects a crowd of about 100,000 spectators every day.   • Wayamba People Show Their Appreciation for War Heroes

    GRATEFUL people in the Wayamba (north-western province) offered their profuse thanks and appreciation to His Excellency, the President, Secretary Defence and former military chiefs during a glittering ceremony at Panduwasnuwara Raja Maha Viharaya Friday (18) evening, attended by thousands of next of kin of fallen War Heroes, disable War Heroes and a host of dignitaries and the public. This special ceremony “Wayamba Upahara” of appreciation has been organized by the Governor for North-Western province Tissa Balalla and the Chief Minister Athula Wijesinghe as part of the island-wide felicitation ceremonies that extol heroic services of the President Mahinda Rajapakse, Dr. Gotabaya Rajapakse, Secretary Defence, former Chief of Defence Staff and Tri-service Commanders.....

  • Soldier Saves Woman from Drowning

    A WOMAN who attempted to commit suicide by jumping into the Nilwala River in Matara on Thursday evening was saved by a soldier of the Sri Lanka Army attached to the signal room of the Third Gemunu Watch located in close proximity to the bank of the river. Army Private W.K.A Premakumara who was on duty immediately rushed to the scene and saved the woman from drowning. “As I ran towards the bank, I saw the woman drifting down stream. I jumped into the river and raced against the flow and caught her in mid stream when she was about to drown. After landing on the bank, Corporal Jayalath and I gave her first aid and rushed her to hospital. I can swim well and I dared to save her life at the peril of my own,” Premakumara said.

  • UN Under Secretary General for Political Affairs Visits Jaffna

    UNITED Nations under Secretary General for Political Affairs Mr. Lynn Pascoe flew to Jaffna on 17th September morning with his delegation and they were received in Jaffna by the Commander, Security Forces Jaffna, Major General L.B.R Mark. The delegation accompanied by the Jaffna Commander visited the welfare villages situated in Kopai Teachers Training College and university hostels in Kaithadi. They also visited the rehabilitation center in Thelippale which was established to rehabilitate the youth who escaped from the LTTE and the paddy land where the ‘Vap Mangula’ (ceremonial ploughing) was recently held.

    WANNI & EAST: TROOPS operating in the general areas of MUNDIMURIPPU, PUTHUKUDDIYIRUPPU and SUGANDIPURAM conducted search and clear operations in those areas on Monday (21) and recovered seventeen T-56 magazines, four links of Light Machine Guns (LMG), eleven T-56 weapons, two hundred and eighty rounds of T-56 ammunition, one T-81 weapon, seventy bombs, eighteen 60mm illuminating para.....

  • 8,000 Students from Vavuniya to Sit GCE O/L

    MORE than 8,000 students from among the displaced in Vavuniya had applied for this December’s GCE Ordinary Level Examination, and this is an increase from the 6,000 who applied for the exam from Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu last year, the Education Ministry said yesterday.Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said a large number of students from these two districts were unable to sit the exam last December due to the war situation. Mr. Premajayantha said the Ministry would make additional educational arrangements for these students.

  • Police Find Hidden LTTE Suicide Jackets from Vavuniya; One Female Cadre Arrested & Another Commits Suicide

    VAVUNIYA: OFFICERS from the Special Investigation Unit in Galle unearthed a haul of explosives from PUNTHOTTAM area in VAVUNIYA Tuesday (22) following intelligence provided by an LTTE female terrorist who had been living in disguise and caught by the Police. On information, the Police raided a house on the KUMANKULAM road, UYILANKULAM to arrest two female cadres. However one of them identified as KANDIA GAURI, believed to be around 31, has committed suicide swallowing cyanide when the Police were in the process of arresting her.
