A WOMAN who attempted to commit suicide by jumping into the Nilwala River in Matara on Thursday evening was saved by a soldier of the Sri Lanka Army attached to the signal room of the Third Gemunu Watch located in close proximity to the bank of the river. Army Private W.K.A Premakumara who was on duty immediately rushed to the scene and saved the woman from drowning.
“As I ran towards the bank, I saw the woman drifting down stream. I jumped into the river and raced against the flow and caught her in mid stream when she was about to drown. After landing on the bank, Corporal Jayalath and I gave her first aid and rushed her to hospital. I can swim well and I dared to save her life at the peril of my own,” Premakumara said.
