UN Under Secretary General for Political Affairs Visits Jaffna

UNITED Nations under Secretary General for Political Affairs Mr. Lynn Pascoe flew to Jaffna on 17th September morning with his delegation and they were received in Jaffna by the Commander, Security Forces Jaffna, Major General L.B.R Mark.

The delegation accompanied by the Jaffna Commander visited the welfare villages situated in Kopai Teachers Training College and university hostels in Kaithadi. They also visited the rehabilitation center in Thelippale which was established to rehabilitate the youth who escaped from the LTTE and the paddy land where the ‘Vap Mangula’ (ceremonial ploughing) was recently held.   

During this visit Mr. Pascoe inquired about the requirements of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Jaffna peninsula and the steps taken to improve the living condition of the people.       

At the end of his visit Mr. Lynn Pascoe expressed his satisfaction about the steps taken by the government to expedite resettlement of the IDPs and welfare measures already in progress. He also stressed the importance of resettling them in their villages soon.

Deputy Foreign Minister Mr. Husain Bahila, Commander, Security Forces Wanni, Major General Kamal Gunerathne, District Secretary, Jaffna Mr. K. Ghanesh and several other government and NGO officials also participated in the visit.
