  • Lingering Memories of a Frontline Commander


    A Most Noble Profession - Memoirs That Linger, a book written by former Commander of the Sri Lanka Army (1994-1996), General Gerry de Silva, on his experience as a top ranking military officer was launched on Wednesday. During the launch held at the Ramada hotel - Colombo in the presence of a large gathering of past and present top ranking military officials, General de Silva (retd) presented the first copy of the book to Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

  • President Rajapaksa Opens Army-Built 100 More New Homes & School Building in Peninsula


    100 new houses, built solely through Army labour within a record span of just 10 days with raw materials, provided by the government, were vested with needy Jaffna families by His Excellency, the President Mahinda Rajapaksa Tuesday (19) afternoon during a symbolic ceremony at Keeramalai. Sri Lanka Army serving the peninsula, on the instructions of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya entered into house construction sphere for the first time soon after the war came to an end, launching its maiden 1700 house building project in the Jaffna peninsula under the auspices of Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Commander, Security Forces, Jaffna.The Army early this year completed the project successfully after releasing those new 1700 houses....

    A military delegation of trainee officers at Sapugaskanda Defence Services Command and Staff College (DSCSC) are currently visiting India on a 10-day long study tour as an integral part of their training curriculum. The delegation to India for training is comprised of two foreign trainees. Presently four such DSCSC trainee officer military delegations, representing tri-services of Sri Lanka are on study tours to Pakistan....

  • U.S. Donates Trucks to Aid Sri Lankan Army's Humanitarian Demining


    The Humanitarian Demining Unit (HDU) of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) received four trucks from the people of the United States, rugged vehicles that will aid their demining efforts in the North and East. Major General Ubaya Medawala and Brigadier Udayantha Wijeratne received the donation at the American Embassy from U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka and Maldives Patricia Butenis on Wednesday (20).
  • Japan-Lanka Friendship Assn Repeats Its Goodwill Gestures for Army

     
    Further cementing long-lasting bonds of goodwill and bilateral cooperation, the Japan-Sri Lanka Friendship Association (JSLFA) once again donated two more ambulances and a fire engine for Army use Monday (25) morning during a brief ceremony at Army Headquarters. A 36-member Japanese delegation, comprised of members of the Nakatsugawa Rotary Club and the JSLFA, now in Sri Lanka on a week-long tour, visited the Army Headquarters to represent the donation ceremony this morning.

    The state of the art, ‘Abimansala’ (wellness resort), on the banks of the ancient Nuwara Wewa in Anuradhapura, exclusively designed to house dependent Army War Heroes for the rest of their life-span, was ceremonially vested in disable warriors by His Excellency, the President Mahinda Rajapaksa this morning (26) at the request of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya.
