President Rajapaksa Opens Army-Built 100 More New Homes &;amp; School Building in Peninsula

100 new houses, built solely through Army labour within a record span of just 10 days with raw materials, provided by the government, were vested with needy Jaffna families by His Excellency, the President Mahinda Rajapaksa Tuesday (19) afternoon during a symbolic ceremony at Keeramalai.

Sri Lanka Army serving the peninsula, on the instructions of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya entered into house construction sphere for the first time soon after the war came to an end, launching its maiden 1700 house building project in the Jaffna peninsula under the auspices of Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Commander, Security Forces, Jaffna.

The Army early this year completed the project successfully after releasing those new 1700 houses to needy families in separate inaugural ceremonies, graced by the President, Secretary Defence and the Commander of the Army. 
 
Tuesday’s ceremonial inaugurate of 100 more new houses, erected by Army troops within 10 days in Vettalkerni, Kopay and Varani areas amply testifies to the commitment, determination and dedication of the troops who are actively working towards the betterment of the Jaffna populace.

President Rajapaksa after symbolically handing over 10 of those new houses at Keeramalai took a keen interest in interacting with those recipients while taking time off to inspect their old dwelling places around the same area. Each new house cost the government as less as some Rs 250,000 – 300,000 for completion since the Army was providing necessary planning, architecture, infrastructure facilities and labour, free of charge.

A host of Ministers, distinguished guests, Commander of the Army, Commander, Security Forces, Jaffna and civilians were associated with the occasion.

In the meantime, the new two-storied building at Navalar Government Tamil Mixed School (GTMS) in Kopay, constructed by soldiers of Sri Lanka Army’s 5 Corps of Engineer Services (5 CES), was declared opened by His Excellency, the President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the same day (19).

The project, supported by other soldiers serving Kopay was a gift donated by the Provincial Council for Uva Province.

Mrs. Shanthini Vageeshan, Principal welcomed the President on arrival at the school premises before he was conducted to receive blessings in a special pooja at the Hindu temple within the compound. Afterwards, HE the President unveiled a special plaque to mark the inauguration of the new building, “Uva-North Friendship Hall”.

Chief Minister for Uva Province Mr. Shashindre Rajapaksa, addressing the gathering afterwards did not forget to extend his sincere thanks to the Commander, Security Forces Headquarters, Jaffna and the troops for their enormous support and commitment, shown to finish the construction at such speed.

The new building with separate classrooms of 90 x 25ft each is a donation from the people of the Uva Province to the North as a token of goodwill. The foundation stone to this building was laid by the Chief Minister for Uva Province Mr. Shashindra Rajapaksa on 14th November 2010.

The Uva Provincial Council has spent Rs. 5 million towards building materials and peripheral work, but its construction was completed by the soldiers of the Sri Lanka Army.

On directions given by Commander of the Army and blessings given by the Commander, Security Forces Headquarters Jaffna, soldiers of the 5 Corps of Engineer Services, assisted by soldiers from other units serving Kopay undertook the challenge of construction of this building.

Towards the end of the day’s itinerary, the President visited the Army Mess at Vasavilan and met a cross section of administrative officers under training where he shared a couple of thoughts with them.

A gathering of Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament, Governor for Northern Province Major General (Retd) G.A. Chandrasiri, Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander, Security Forces Jaffna Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe and civilians were present at the occasion.
