  • Buried LTTE Items Unearthed

    MULLAITTIVU: TROOPS operating in the general area of PUTHUKKUDIYIRUPPU found a number of items belonging to LTTE terrorists during a search and clear operation Tuesday (28) morning. The recovered items, five LTTE uniforms, one cap, one LTTE flag, one suicide jacket, one belt, twenty-seven audio cassettes, fourteen compact discs, twenty-six VHS cassettes, one deck, two satellite receivers, two remote controllers, one CDMA phone, thirteen identity cards, five I-com sets and one photo album, had been buried in the area when they were found by the troops.

  • Over 200 Doctors Volunteer to Serve N & E Hospitals

    OVER two hundred doctors will leave today to work at hospitals in the Northern and Eastern provinces to care for the displaced civilians who are in need of treatment. The Health Ministry and security forces have assured security and protection for the doctors. About 232 doctors have volunteered to provide their services to the displaced citizens in the two provinces. They have been given temporary appointment letters to the hospitals in the North and East for two months upon a special Cabinet approval, the Government Medical Officers' Association Assistant Secretary Dr. Upul Gunasekera said yesterday.

  • Northern Resettlement Begins; First Batch of 125 Families to be Resettled Tomorrow

    RESETTLEMENT of people displaced in the North has begun in the Mannar district at the Musali Divisional Secretariat area and the first batch of villagers will come back to their original properties. The first batch of 125 families would be resettled tomorrow (April 30, 2009). The Government has provided funds for the people coming back to their villages to repair and renovate some of the homes that were damaged, Nation Building Ministry Secretary W.K.Kumarasiri told the Daily News yesterday.

  • Six Suicide Boats Destroyed

    MULLAITTIVU: LTTE Sea Tiger attempt to launch an attack on the Army troops engaged in rescue operations in MULLAIVAIKKAL area was foiled early this morning (29) when the Naval troops on sea patrol located a flotilla of Sea Tiger boats in the MULLAITTIVU seas and fired at them.  According to the Navy, six boats including four suicide boats were destroyed before they carried out the mission.

  • Massacre of Fishermen Send Shock Waves in Ampara District

    THE massacre of five fishermen in cold blood by an armed gang, allegedly by the LTTE, sent shock waves through the far flung Panama village in Ampara district which had been the home of the Sinhala and Tamil communities that lived in peace and harmony despite the three decades of North- East war. The Sinhala and Tamil families further strengthened their inter relations through marriages setting an example to their counterpart in other areas. However, the massacre of a group of fishermen last Saturday brought much woe and sorrow to Panama village. Anthony Pillai Geevarathnam (35) Somasundaram Kadiravel (28), Sinnathambi Udayan (26),  Ranjun Raghunathan (21) and Gnanasundaram Wijekumar (25) of Abeysinghapura in Panama.  Except for Raghunathan the rest  were married.

    IT WAS a useful opportunity to explain the actual situation in Sri Lanka. At this critical juncture, we were able to make the international community understand what is really happening here. Many of the delegates stopped me in the lobby to express appreciation of my speech, and we had good responses at the bilateral meetings we had on the sidelines. They could understand that I have no reason to lie when I say that I feel we are on the right path. Although I am in the Government, I also represent my community. And I am a pioneer of the armed struggle. I fought for Tamil rights, and sacrificed a lot in that struggle, so they were ready to listen to me.

    MULLAITTIVU: DESPERATE and panicking Tiger terrorists in the VALAYANMADAM “No Fire Zone” (NFZ) in the past 24 hours after they rammed an explosive-filled lorry for a suicidal mission early Tuesday (28) morning have carried out seven suicide attacks ending Wednesday (29) mid-noon. Terrorists Wednesday (29) morning carried out three suicide missions, targeting advancing troops and military hardware. Two of those LTTE suicide bombers on two motorbikes blew themselves up targeting advancing troops.....

    MULLAITTIVU: TIGER terrorists, struggling for existence in the “No Fire Zone” are confirmed to have six large boats, equipped with anti-aircraft weapons, high fidelity communication equipment, global positioning systems and other sophisticated instruments at their disposal for any eventual escape as the last resort, top level military intelligence confirmed. Similarly, five more LTTE boats, packed with food.....

  • French & British Foreign Ministers Receive First-Hand Updates from Civilians

    FRENCH and British foreign ministers, accompanied by several Sri Lankan ministers, secretary to Foreign Ministry and senior officials arrived at the Manic Farm Relief Village today (29) to receive a first-hand assessment of the prevailing sanitary and welfare arrangements. British Foreign Minister David Miliband and his French counterpart Bernard Kouchner along with Ministers Rizard Badurdeen, Rohita Abeygunawardane, Maheepala Herath and foreign secretary Palitha Kohana on their arrival in Vavuniya were received by Major General Jagath Jayasuriya.
