  • Parts of Buried LTTE Artillery Guns Emerge from NE Beach

    NORTH: A FAIR stock of parts of four 152 mm and one 130 mm artillery guns, emerged from the beach east of PUTHUKUDIYIRUPPU Sunday afternoon (08) when rising waves of the eastern seas washed them off. Troops unearthed those parts of artillery guns kept hidden by the LTTE in sand after they were noticed by the troops conducting search and clear operations in the area. 

  • Mallavi School Re-opened

    YOGAPURAM Vidyalaya, Mallavi in Mullaittivu was re-opened from today (9) for the students in the area. Thunukkai, Mallavi and Poonager areas were cleared of landmines under ‘Uthuru Wasanthaya’ programme and resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in those areas have been in progress after about 30 years of terrorist control. The government had taken steps to rehabilitate the schools in those areas for the use of students and under this project Mallavi Yogapuram Vidyalaya....

  • Commander Thanks Ven. Elle Gunawansa Thera for His Support

    COMMANDER of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya on Tuesday (10) evening visited  Dharmayathanaya temple at Colombo 07 and expressed his gratitude for the support Ven. Thero extended during recently concluded Wanni humanitarian operations.Ven. Elle Gunawansa Thero was instrumental in collecting large stocks of drinking water bottles and other essentials for War Heroes whilst the Wanni battles were on. The Commander of the Army who was then the Commander SFHQ (Wanni) distributed those donations sent by Ven. Thero among the soldiers at that point of time. Ven. Elle Gunawansa Thero thanking the Commander for his visit presented him with a Buddha statue as a token of memory of his visit to the Dharmayathanaya temple. 

  • Search & Finds Continue

    NORTH & EAST: CONTINUED search and clear operations conducted by the troops in VISUAMADU, SUGANDIPURAM PUTHUKKUDIYIRUPPU AKKARAYANKULAM and MULLAYAWALAI areas during Tuesday (10) recovered twelve hand grenades, one anti tank mine, twenty-nine rounds of peddle gun ammunition, eight anti personnel mines, two claymore mines, four Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG) and one thousand rounds of unidentified ammunition. Meanwhile, Troops in KANCHIKUDICHCHIARU in the east recovered one Sub Machine Gun (SMG), one pistol, five hand grenades, seventeen anti personnel mines, fifteen anti personnel mine fuses and one 10-ft long detonator code.

  • US Helped Destroy Some LTTE 'Floating Arsenals'-President

    PRESIDENT Mahinda Rajapaksa, on Monday (Oct 9), responding to criticism that Sri Lanka’s foreign relations were in shambles and the country isolated internationally, declared that the United States of America had helped Sri Lanka to wipe out the LTTE shipping fleet. An irate President said that the US had alerted Sri Lanka to the presence of LTTE ‘floating arsenals’ on the high seas. This confirmed the recent revelation by The Island that a foreign power had helped the Sri Lanka Navy to destroy four of the eight ships, including three sunk in a two-day operation in 2007, causing a severe setback to the LTTE.

  • Recruitment to Armed Forces to Continue

    THE armed forces will continue to recruit officers and personnel in order to meet their targets for this year and the coming years, said a spokesman for the military yesterday. Military Spokesman Brig Udaya Nanayakkara told Daily Mirror yesterday that recruitment to the Army would continue till December 31. “Our target is 10,000 recruits for the new batch,” he said. He said that the monthly wage would be increased by Rs 1000 for all officers and soldiers and that an allowance of Rs.3000 would also be paid to each member of the Army.

  • Donations for Eastern Students

    233 BRIGADE troops with the assistance of Sampath Bank, Ampara Branch organized a donation of school uniforms and books to students in the area under Army’s  social welfare project. The event took place on 8th November 2009 in Kiddumuruvilkulam village, Ampara with the participation of the officials of the Sampath Bank. About one hundred selected students were provided school uniforms, shoes and school books on that day.

  • RPGs, AP Mines & Detonators Found

    NORTH, EAST & COLOMBO : ARMY troops during their search and clear operations on Wednesday (11) recovered one claymore mine, two mobile phones, four 81mm mortar bombs, four 60mm mortar bombs, six Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG), five hand grenades, one Arul bomb, fourteen anti personnel (AP) mines, eight trip flares from the general areas of IRUPPALAI, VISUAMADU, AKKARAYANKULAM, SUGANDIPURAM and MULLAITTIVU.

  • SVAB President Impressed with Skills of Pre-School Children

    TWO exhibitions of handicraft organized by kids of two SVAB (Seva Vanitha Army Branch)-managed pre-schools in Anuradhapura and Kandy were inaugurated by SVAB President Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya on Wednesday (11) at respective pre-schools. Kids at Anuradhapura 'Rankekulu' and Kandy 'Virukekulu' pre-schools welcomed Mrs Jayasuriya who later declared open both exhibitions cutting ribbons and lighting traditional oil lamps.

  • First Medal for Sri Lanka at 18th Asian Athletic Meet Won by Chaminda Wijekoon of Sri Lanka Army

    CHAMINDA WIJEKOON of Sri Lanka Army won the first medal for Sri Lanka at 18th Asian Athletic Meet being held in Gu-Angshu, China. He won the Silver medal in 1500 m for men’s on Wednesday (11) finishing the event in 3 minutes and   47. 08 seconds, just 0.07 seconds behind the gold medalist of the event Mohommed Omman of Kazakhstan. After the event, Wijekoon thanked the present Army Commander Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasooriya and his former coach the Late Brigadier Perry Liyanage and all others who helped him in his athletic carrier.
