  • Army Helps Resettled People to Engage in Self-Employment

    UNDER the Government’s “Negenahira Novodaya” programme many families who were resettled in Batticaloa area after their exit from IDP centers in Vavuniya received a helping hand from the Army when each family was gifted with twenty chickens as a source of income. Members of ten resettled families that come under 234 Brigade in Batticaloa took this initiative on the instructions of the officer commanding of ‘C’ company of the 18th Battalion of Sinha Regiment Captain Jayantha Rajapaksa who is in charge of the Town Division-II of Ariyampathi.

  • Area Headquarters Join Celebrating Army Day

    SECURITY FORCES Headquarters, Divisions and Brigades across the country had their own parallel 60th Anniversary commemorative ceremonies at respective locations on the Army Day (10) itself. The Jaffna 51 Division headquarters conducted a community work (Shramadana) in order to clean the Jaffna hospital surroundings on 9th October 2009. The following day’s ceremony gave pride of place to the Commander’s message and a tree planting campaign. A large number of officers and soldiers including Divisional Commander of the 51 Division and the Brigade Commander of 511 Brigade were present on those occasions.

  • More LTTE Hidden Mines & Bombs Found

    NORTH & EAST: ARMY troops carrying out search and clear operations in the general areas of NAYAKKULAM, AKKARAYANKULAM, PUTHUKKUDIYIRUPPU, KAPPUKULAM and KULAMURIPPU colleted three hundred and eighty-two anti personnel mines, twenty-four detonators, one hundred and five rounds of 12.7 mm ammunition, fifteen 40 mm cartridges, one 12 bore shotgun, eight hand grenades, two booby traps, three 81 mm mortar bombs, one Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) and forty-eight 60 mm mortar bombs on Tuesday (20).

  • Army Tattoo Continues Drawing Massive Crowds

    THE FOURTH day of the Army Tattoo on Tuesday (20) witnessed a packed crowd as the mega spectacle is reaching its closure by Friday (23) evening. Tuesday’s ceremonial inauguration was graced by Commander of Sri Lanka Air Force Air Chief Marshal Roshan Goonatilake as  Chief Guest on the invitation of Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya. Air Force commander was received by the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya on arrival at the venue. The visiting Air Force Commander hoisted the National Flag and inaugurated the fourth day of the year’s most adventurous show.

  • One More Group Set to Leave for UN Missions

    THE passing-out parade of another group of two hundred Sri Lankan troops including seven officers and one hundred and one other ranks of the Army from the Army, one officer and forty-five sailors of Sri Lanka Navy and one officer and forty-five airmen from Air Force, scheduled to take part in the UN Peace Keeping Mission in Haiti shortly was held Wednesday (21) morning at Armed Corps Regimental Centre parade ground.

  • Indian National Cadet Corps Chief Meets Commander

    DIRECTOR General, Indian National Cadet Corps (NCC) Lieutenant General R.K Karwal currently in Sri Lanka in connection with several military ceremonies called on Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya Wednesday (21) morning at his office in the Army Headquarters. Lieutenant General R.K Karwal, accompanied by his wife Mrs. Karwal is presently in the island following invitations extended to them by Ministry of Defence in connection with the conduct of Hermann Loos and De Soysa Camps at National Cadet Corps Training Centre at Rantambe.

  • Defence Services Clinch President Rajapaksa Trophy

    THE DEFENCE SERVICES team created history when they defeated the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union side by 15 points to 6 in the inaugural rugby encounter played for the President Rajapaksa Trophy at the Sri Lanka Navy Sports Club grounds in Welisara yesterday.Defence Services No. 8 Namal Rajapaksa making a break with a host of SLRFU XV defenders making a vain attempt to foil him in their match played at Welisara yesterday which Defence Services won 15-6.

  • Weapons Still Emerge from Former LTTE Strongholds

    NORTH & EAST: ARMY TROOPS clearing former LTTE strongholds in PUTHUKKUDDIYIRUPPU, AMPAKAMAM and NAVATKULAM, areas conducted search and clear operations on Thursday (22) and found one 130 mm artillery shell, twelve 60 mm mortar fuses, three remote controllers, three 60 mm mortar bombs, one hundred rounds of Multi Purpose Machine Gun (MPMG) ammunition, eighteen T-56 magazines, one T-56 weapon.....

  • More LTTE Bombs Uncovered


    NORTH & EAST:
    TROOPS with the intention of clearing former LTTE strongholds in MURMUDDAI, PUTHUKKUDDIYIRUPPU, IRANAPALAI, KAPPUKULAM and MULLAITTIVU areas conducted searches for another day on Wednesday (21) and  found thirty-eight anti personnel mines, a large stock of weapon parts,  twenty-five 60 mm mortar bombs, fifteen cans containing  210l of kerosene oil, one   Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG), thirty rounds of 12.7 ammunition, one hundred rounds of Multi Purpose Machine Gun (MPMG) ammunition and one 81 mm mortar base plate.
  • Vavnathivu Parameshwari School Receives TV Set


    THE Civil Coordinating office in Batticaloa-based 234 Brigade Headquarters with the support it received from philanthropists in Ganemulla area donated a TV and sports accessories to Vavunathivu Parameshwari Vidyalaya in Batticaloa as a token of goodwill. The donation included a colour TV set with the antenna and its cable, six cricket bats, six tennis balls, school bags for seventy-five students, donation of a set of six exercise books to each 180 students and a stock of pens, pencils and water colour boxes.
