UNDER the Government’s “Negenahira Novodaya” programme many families who were resettled in Batticaloa area after their exit from IDP centers in Vavuniya received a helping hand from the Army when each family was gifted with twenty chickens as a source of income.
Members of ten resettled families that come under 234 Brigade in Batticaloa took this initiative on the instructions of the officer commanding of ‘C’ company of the 18th Battalion of Sinha Regiment Captain Jayantha Rajapaksa who is in charge of the Town Division-II of Ariyampathi. The distribution took place on 18th October 2009. The donation would enable them to start self-employment as the chickens grow.
Army troops also donated clothes, books and other educational equipment to pre-schools and also to school children of those families. Adults in those families were also given away one week dry-ration items to mark the Army Anniversary.
