  • President Responds to Commander's Request for Funds to Pay Welfare Loans

    HE THE President Mahinda Rajapaksa, following representations made by Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya to Secretary Defence Dr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa over insufficiency of funds to pay the Distress Loan (ten-month loan), applied by all ranks in the Army, has instructed the Treasury to release a sum of Rs. 700 million on a priority basis. The popularly called ‘ten-month loan’ granted to all Army Officers and Other Ranks against a very minimal rate is deducted from their salaries within a period of five years.....
     

  • Army Tattoo Set to Begin Ceremonially

    THE Army Tattoo, the final and most thrilling phase of the Army 60th Anniversary celebrations begins Saturday evening (17) at Kettarama stadium, Colombo. A galaxy of distinguished guests, administrators, military chiefs, tri-service officers, former military chiefs and invitees are expected to grace the inaugural ceremony Saturday evening (17). This mega spectacle that highlights Army heroism, gallantry, acrobatics and an assortment of undisputed skills of the Army.....

  • SAARC Senior Officers & Cadets Meet Army Commander

    THIRTY Cadets of five SAARC countries along with some senior military officers who are presently on a visit to Sri Lanka met Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya at Army Headquarters, Colombo Saturday (17) morning. The delegation, headed by Director General National Cadet Corps (NCC) Bangladesh Brigadier General S.I Hosssain included five senior officers from Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Nepal and Pakistan and thirty male and female Cadets of National Cadet Corps (NCC) in respective countries.

  • President Appoints High Powered Team for Accelerated Development in Jaffna

  • President Declares Open Army Tattoo at Kettarama

    THE Army Tattoo, the final event organized in connection with the Army 60th Anniversary celebrations was ceremoniously declared open Saturday (17) evening at Kettarama stadium by His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapaksa who graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Chief of Defence Staff General Sarath Fonseka and Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya received the President on his arrival at the venue. President Rajapaksa hoisted the National flag at the inauguration while Gen. Fonseka and Lt. Gen. Jayasuriya hoisted the flag of the Office of the CDS and the Army flag respectively. After the Army Band played the national anthem bringing everyone at Kettarama to attention,  the Chief Guest, military chiefs and all present observed a two-minute silence in honour of fallen War Heroes. The mega spectacle commenced after the President was conducted to the Grand Stand by Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army.

  • Troops Recover Three Suicide Jackets & Other LTTE Military Items

    NORTH & EAST: ARMY TROOPS during their search and clear operations in the general areas of CHEKKADIPILAVU, AKKARAYANKULAM, PUTHUKKUDDIYIRUPPU, SUGANDIPURAM and MULLIYAVELLI recovered three suicide jackets each weighing about 3kg, four T-56 mark-II weapons, eleven claymore mines, thirty-six anti personnel mines, seven Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG), seventy-five rounds of 12.7 ammunition.....

  • Army Commander Opens Second Day in Army Tattoo

    THE Chief Guest for the second day of the Army Tattoo at Kettarama stadium was the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya. The Chief of Staff of the Army Major General Mendaka Samarasinghe and Mrs. Anusha Samarasinghe received the Army Commander Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya and Mrs. Manjulika Jayasuriya on their arrival at the Kettarama stadium. The Chief Guest Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, hoisted the Army flag and inaugurated the day’s proceedings.

  • More LTTE Military Items Unearthed

    NORTH: DURING search and clear operations conducted by the troops in the general areas of NAVALI, NITHTHIKAIKULAM, AKKARAYANKULAM, PUTHUKKUDIYIRUPPU, and APPUKULAM, troops recovered two claymore mines, one 9mm pistol with a magazine, fifteen anti personnel mines,  one Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG), one T-56 weapon, one hundred rounds of Multi Purpose Machine Gun (MPMG) ammunition, one hundred and eighteen rounds of 9 mm pistol ammunition, sixteen rounds of M-16 ammunition and a large quantity of weapon spare parts on Sunday (18).

  • Army Tattoo Continues to Draw Spectators in Thousands; Navy Commander, the Chief Guest of its Third Day

    THE Army Tattoo continued for its third successive day on Monday (19) at Kettarama with attendance of the Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe as Chief Guest. Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya received the Chief Guest who hoisted the National flag prior to opening the tattoo. The Army Commandos had to however postpone their para jump, the first and most expected event of the audience to the next day due to adverse weather conditions.

  • President Inaugurates Work on First Cetiya Commemorating Triumph Over Terrorism

    PRESIDENT Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday (19) inaugurated the construction of the first Adhisthana Cetiya in the sacred city of Anuradhapura, being erected to commemorate the Nation’s triumph over terrorism.This is the first nine such cetiyas named Hela Jaya Maha Seya which are to be constructed in all nine provinces in the country. It was announced during the inaugural ceremony that in addition to the nine commemorative Stupas, two Christian churches, two Hindu temples and two mosques would be erected in various parts of the country to signify victory, peace and harmony after a nearly three decade long conflict.
