  • Army Seva Vanitha President Meets First Lady

    PRESIDENT Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) Mrs. Manjulika Jayasuriya had her first official meeting with the First Lady Mrs. Shiranthi Rajapakse on Tuesday (22) after she was appointed the head of the SVAB. Mrs. Jayasuriya was welcomed at the Temple Trees where the two ladies had cordial discissons on Seva Vanitha matters and future arrangements on welfare of Army War Heroes and their families. During the meeting, President SVAB presented a detailed account about the centre to be established soon to rehabilitate and look after the totally disable War Heroes for the rest of their life.
      

  • University Students at IDP Centres to Continue Higher Education

    FIFTY SIX University students who found temporary shelter in Vavuniya IDP (Internally Displaced Persons) centres during humanitarian operations have once again got opportunity to continue their higher education at the University of Jaffna. Twenty five male students and thirty one female students belonging to fifty six families were brought to the transit camp at Kaithady University students’ hostel and released to join the University of Jaffna.

  • Sixth Security Forces Headquarters to Take Charge of Security in South

    SECURITY FORCES Headquarters-South (SFHQ-S) raised to further strengthen security in the south including Colombo, commenced official functioning after it was ceremonially opened Wednesday (23) at Panagoda. This new SFHQ commands 11 Division in Panagoda, 112 Brigade in Polhengoda, four Area Headquarters in Kandy, Hambantota, Galle and Diyatalawa, two Sub Area Headquarters in Ratnapura and Kurunegala and Operation Command Colombo (OCC) covering the largest area of the country with approximately 77% of the country’s total population.

  • Army Hospital Receives Donation of Twelve Adjustable Beds

    EXTENDING a gesture of gratitude towards War Heroes who are receiving medical treatment in hospital, one more Sri Lankan living in the USA donated some beds to the Army hospital for the use of needy inmates. Mr. Leonard Weerasinghe presently living in New York during his visit to the island found the opportunity to donate twelve adjustable beds, each costing Rs. 65,000/= to the Army hospital in recognition of the commitment of soldiers during the war to eliminate terrorism from the motherland. Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya received the donation from Mr. Leonard Weerasinghe during a brief function held at the hospital premises in the Army Headquarters Thursday (24) morning.

  • India to Assist Lanka to Repair KKS Harbour

    SRI LANKA has sought the assistance of India to rehabilitate and repair the important Northern harbour of Kankesanturai (KKS). At a recent meeting at the Indian High Commission in Colombo, the Sri Lanka Ports Authority submitted a list of assistance Sri Lanka expects from her Northern neighbour to make the harbour fully suitable for navigation for her ships. The KKS harbour was damaged in the tsunami and thereafter due to the security situation the harbour could not be fully restored.

  • Textbooks to Jaffna Via A9, One Million Sent:

    THE EDUCATION Ministry yesterday sent one million school textbooks worth Rs. 108 million to Jaffna via A9 after 28 years. As a result of the Government’s humanitarian mission, the A9 road can now be used for textbooks transportation to the North and East. Accordingly, another stock of 200,000 textbooks for 2010 will be sent to Jaffna using the A9 road. Earlier, the Education Ministry had to get assistance of the Sri Lanka Navy for transporting textbooks.....
