ENSURING the right to education of the children in the East, Vakarai Maha Vidyalaya constructed anew in the same old premises was declared open by His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Tuesday (22).
The school was partly destroyed during the tsunami disaster in 2004 and later sustained further damages when the LTTE terrorists occupied its buildings for their military purposes.
With the liberation of the whole east by Security Forces, Ministry of Education with assistance of the European Union took steps to reconstruct it with modern educational and technical facilities making it one of the best schools in the Batticaloa district.
Ministers Susil Premajayantha, V. Muralitharan, reprsentatives of the EU, Chief of Defence Staff General Sarath Fonseka, Commander of the Air Force Air Chief Marshal Roshan Goonatilake, Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe, Inspector General of Police Jayantha Wickramaratne, Commander Security Forces East Major General Srinath Rajapakse and senior military and Police officers attended the function.
A large crowd of villagers were also present on the occasion.
