  • Curtains Fall on 47th Inter Regimental Athletic Tournament

    The 47th Inter Regimental Athletic Tournament, organized by the Army Athletic Association came to an end Thursday (19) evening at Sugathadasa Stadium grounds after the three-day long event set new records and honoured yesteryear veterans. Over 1000 athletes representing twenty-four Regiments in the Army competed for their slots in marathon races, 100 m, 200 m, 400 m, races and relays, shot puts, javelin throw, long distance running, high jump, long jump, discus throw, etc during those three days (August 17, 18 & 19).

  • President Rajapaksa Inaugurates 'Construct 2010' Exhibition at BMICH

    The mega construction exhibition ‘Construct 2010’ with more than 225 exhibition stalls at BMICH Sirimavo Bandaranaike complex was ceremonially declared open Friday (13) morning by HE the President Mahinda Rajapaksa. The event organized by the National Construction Association of Sri Lanka (NCASL) to coincide with its 10th anniversary mirrors the new innovative techniques and modern construction designs with special emphasis on cost effectiveness and durability.

  • 22 Division Builds New House for Missing War Hero's Family

    Following an initiative taken by General Officer Commanding in 22 Division Brigadier A K S Perera, the mother of the War Hero, Lance Corporal Samaka Cooray who went missing during Puthukkudiyiruppu battles on 1st February 2009 was donated a new house, built at a cost of Rs 1.1 million. The family of this War Hero had a temporary house, made of tint sheets in their own plot of land at Mihindupura, Trincomalee. Late War Hero’s father, a fisherman....

  • Prosecution & Defence Complete 4th Witness Evidence

    The Court Martial - 2 probing charges against G.S.C. Fonseka resumed its sittings Saturday (21) as scheduled. Both prosecution and defence on Saturday (21) completed leading of evidence on the 4th witness and the next witness is to be called up on 23rd August at 2.00 p.m. when the Court sits again. (Ends)

  • Army Gives Free Breakfast to Madhu Pilgrims

    Soldiers in Mannar offered meals to a large number of pilgrims who visited the holy shrine to receive blessings of Our Lady of Madhu on 15th August. This was organized under the guidance of the Area Commander for Mannar Brigadier M.A.M Dias on the instructions of the Security Forces Commander Wanni Major General G.D.H.K. Gunaratna.

  • Big victory for Sri Lanka at UNHRC

    THE Sri Lankan resolution, expanded from 17 to 29 paragraphs titled ‘Assistance to Sri Lanka in the promotion and protection of human rights’ was adopted by the UN Human Rights Council by an absolute majority yesterday. It was a strong endorsement of President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Government’s efforts at routing terrorism and the successful handling of the world’s biggest hostage crisis, Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe who led the Lankan delegation to Geneva, said yesterday. Sri Lanka’s resolution, which was subjected to a vote, was adopted by the 47-member Council with 29 voting in favour and 12 against. Six other nations abstained from voting. Minister Samarasinghe who spoke over the phone from Geneva said “This is a clear message that the international community is behind Sri Lanka in its endeavour to rebuild the nation to provide our citizens with equal opportunities.”

  • Protest Against Canada Supporting LTTE

    HUNDREDS of agitators gathered opposite the Canadian High Commission in Colombo yesterday accusing Canada of supporting the LTTE. They alleged that Canada has been supporting the LTTE terrorists and blamed Canadian authorities for failing to protect Sri Lankans living there and their property. The Cinnamon Gardens Police said that the protestors had remained there for nearly half an hour and dispersed after their protest.
