    THE 2-MILE OPEN swimming competition organized by Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union at Mount Lavinia beach last Sunday (7) offered major winning slots to Army swimmers. Overall Team Championship, Best Team among tri-services and the Police, HPN Challenge Trophy and Best Disabled Swimmer Category were clinched by Army Swimming Team Members. 

  • Survey Reveals How Tigers Threw Untrained Children Into Vanni Battle

    A SURVEY conducted by the Commissioner General of Rehabilitation has revealed that several thousands of children were forcibly recruited by the LTTE and thrown into battle in the last two years of the war. Interviews conducted with over 11,000 detainees on a Justice and Law Reforms Ministry directive have indicated that children were deployed on the Vanni front without proper training.   • Jaffna Roadblocks Removed, Says Army

    THE MILITARY yesterday said that all the road blocks and barriers in the Jaffna peninsula have been removed to facilitate the free movement of the civilians there. “Now the people in the Jaffna peninsula can freely move at any time using public roads with the removal of roadblocks and barriers that had been there for a long period,” military Spokesman Major General Prasad Samarasinghe told the Daily Mirror yesterday. He said that roadblocks and barriers were there for a long period due to security reasons.

  • COURT MARTIAL COMMENCES TO HEAR CHARGES AGAINST GENERAL SARATH FONSEKA


    THE FIRST Court Martial, appointed to try General Sarath Fonseka on charges against his participation in political work while in active service   commenced its sittings as scheduled at 9.30 a.m. Tuesday (16) morning at Navy Headquarters. The Court Martial, presided by Major General H.L Weerathunga took up three charges separately under the above category in accordance with provisions in the Army Act during hearings.

    THE final construction phase of the 10-km long railway track stretch from Thandikulam to Omanthai is nearing completion with the active support the project receives from 5 Field Engineer Regiment of Corps of Engineers in the Army.   • President to Open Mannar Bridge, Causeway Tomorrow

    THE new Mannar bridge and the causeway connecting the Mannar Island with the mainland constructed at a cost of Rs 2,460 million will be opened to the public by President Mahinda Rajapaksa tomorrow. Around 41,000 people in Mannar Island will directly benefit from this project which will improve market approachability and facilitate transportation at a low cost.
