Railway Track to Omanthai Nearing Completion

THE final construction phase of the 10-km long railway track stretch from Thandikulam to Omanthai is nearing completion with the active support the project receives from 5 Field Engineer Regiment of Corps of Engineers in the Army.

Army Engineers in support of the government’s ongoing reconstruction of the northern bound railway line responded positively to the challenge and commenced De-mining work at first soon after Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya gave his blessings for the project. 5 Field Engineers within a matter of few weeks completed de-mining work along the proposed upcoming railway track and commenced soil preparation for metal laying to a width of about 30 m on both sides. A patch of about 7 km has already been properly done using Aggregate Base Course (ABC) mixture, enabling placement of railway tracks in proper order.

Railway Department workers meanwhile have undertaken repairs and reconstruction of culverts and bridges along the new track, as they did during the previous assignment up to Thandikulam.

Army Engineers who completed the project, well ahead of the deadline given to the Army are anxiously awaiting the onset of the next phase of the northbound railway track from Omanthai onwards. The day Omanthai Railway Station become a reality will not be that far, in view of the ongoing nature of the project.
