THE MILITARY yesterday said that all the road blocks and barriers in the Jaffna peninsula have been removed to facilitate the free movement of the civilians there.
“Now the people in the Jaffna peninsula can freely move at any time using public roads with the removal of roadblocks and barriers that had been there for a long period,” military Spokesman Major General Prasad Samarasinghe told the Daily Mirror yesterday. He said that roadblocks and barriers were there for a long period due to security reasons. “But the situation has changed now and there was no need for further restrictions in the peninsula,” the spokesman said.
He said that since the ending of the war and the opening of the A-9 road linking the south and north, military took action to relax the security restriction in the peninsula and drastically remove roadblock and barriers.
Meanwhile, the spokesman said that the army has sped up removing landmines in the Vanni region in order to resettle Internally Displaced Civilians (IDPs) in their original places.
“We have sped up the process of removing landmines, and also resettling people in the Mullaitivu district already started,” Gen. Samarasinghe said.
He also said that army engineers were doing their best to remove landmines and also actions have been taken to develop the infrastructure facilities for the resettlement in these areas. (SJ) (Courtesy: Daily Mirror)
