  • Jaffna Fishing Restrictions Eased; 15 HP Trawlers Allowed

    FISHING restrictions that had been in force in the Jaffna lagoon were removed with immediate effect. Mr. Basil Rajapaksa, Senior Presidential Advisor told fishermen in Gurunagar, Jaffna this afternoon.  Accordingly all fishermen in the lagoon are able to make their movements into fishing through specified entry/exit martial ling points throughout the day.Fishermen have also been allowed to use 15hp trawlers for fishing during day time before dusk falls. 

  • Attempted Assassination of Defence Secretary: Bomb Brought in CARE Vehicle

    INVESTIGATIONS have revealed that the bomb that was exploded at the Pittala Junction in Kollupitiya targeting Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has been brought to Colombo from Kilinochchi in a vehicle belonging to CARE International, an INGO, the Kotahena Police informed the Colombo Chief Magistrate Court yesterday. The vehicle and all suspects involved in transporting the bomb have been taken into custody. The police also produced before Chief Magistrate Nishantha Hapuarachchi a copy of the detention signed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Defence Minister order in respect of Chandrabose Selvachandran alias Michael alias Selvarasa. Kotahena Police also informed the Court that the Police have detained suspects Sivalingam Arunan, Patmanathan Iiyer Sriskandaraja ......

  • More Weapons & Explosives Found

    NORTH & EAST: TROOPS continued their daily search and clear operations in the general areas of ASIKULAM, MAHAULGASKADA, IRANAMADU, ALANKULAM and AKKARAYANKULAM throughout Friday (19). During those search operations, they recovered two T-56 weapons, two T-81 weapons, seventeen claymore mines, thirty-one electronic detonators, one suicide belt, ninety-seven rounds of T-56 ammunition, 1kg of TNT explosives, one parcel containing explosives, one hundred and seventeen anti personnel mines and four rounds of Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG).

  • Sri Lankan Students in Australia Offer Medical Help to War Heroes

    YOUNG Sri Lankan students from Victoria, Australia, concerned about recuperating process of War Heroes in hospitals after they sustained serious injuries during the recently-ended military operations, set an example by donating four new suction machines to Military Hospital, Colombo recently. Official documents, related to the donation were recently offered to President, Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) Mrs. Anoma Fonseka by one of the organizers of the donation, Mr. Asanka Silva. The donation was coordinated by Mr. Lalith Munasinghe who was also present on the occasion. 

  • All Night Pirith Chanting to Bless War Heroes & Army

    A special all-night "Pirith" chanting was organized at the Army Headquarters under the guidance of the Army Commander General Sarath Fonseka Friday (19) evening to mark one month completion of the victory over terrorism. The chanting was also designed to invoke blessings on War Heroes and transfer merits to those who sacrificed their lives for the sake of the country. His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapaksa made a surprise visit to the chanting as the special guest while the chanting was on..

  • Fish Production to Increase in the North

    THE Government said that fish production in the North was expected to increase with the lifting of fishing restrictions in the North. Senior Advisor to the President and Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Resettlement Development and Security in the Northern Province Basil Rajapaksa made known the Government’s decision on lifting fishing restrictions in the North.   • Basil Tells Officials: Complete Developing Access Road to Madhu Shrine Before Feast

    SENIOR Presidential Advisor and Basil Rajapaksa MP instructed officials to complete the development of the access road to the Madhu shrine before the annual Madhu festival. Funds for the project was allocated by President Mahinda Rajapaksa when he was Prime Minister. The total cost of the project is Rs. 95 million. Parliamentarian Rajapaksa made this order when the Presidential Task Force on Northern Development chaired by him reviewed the progress of the development activities in the Mannar district on Saturday (20).

  • Ranaviru Family Outreach Meetings Conclude Successfully in Matara: Victory over Terrorism due to War Heroes - Defence Secretary

    THE 17th and the final session of the round of Ranaviru family outreach meetings organized by the Ranaviru Seva Authority (RSA) was held at the 2nd Gemunu Watch regimental headquarters in Matara on Friday. Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa and several senior government officials met members of over 350 Ranaviru families at this session.The round of meetings commenced in March 2009 in Anuradhapura for Ranaviru families of Anuradhapura and Vavuniya districts.

  • Govt Moots IDP Forum

    THE Government is to create a new forum to discuss IDP protection issues. The forum includes key stakeholders such as senior public officers, key focal points in the UN system and representatives of the international and local Non-Governmental Organizations engaged in providing protection to IDPs. Speaking to relevant parties at a recent meeting, Disaster Management and Human Rights Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said that it was his intention to create forums in Colombo and Vavuniya where protection.....
