  • Army Organized Shramadana Cleans up Hindu Kovil

    Completing one more community-oriented service project, meant for social and spiritual development among the masses in Welikanda, Vakarai, Thoppigala, Valachchenai, Kattankudi and Batticoloa areas, the Army troops under 233 Brigade repaired and cleaned the Kannan Amman Hindu Kovil at Wattavan with the support of civilians in the area. The project, one among 1500 earmarked for the year 2010 in the area, drew a large number of enthusiastic devotees as well as civilians.  

  • New Jaffna DS Calls on Jaffna Commander

    The newly-appointed District Secretary for Jaffna Ms. Imelda Suhumar paid a courtesy call on Commander Security Forces-Jaffna Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe recently at his office at Security Forces Headquarters, Jaffna (SFHQ-J). This senior state official with a record 26 years of service was received warmly by Commander SFHQ-J. She had a formal discussion with the Jaffna Commander on urgent matters of concern and close coordination between administrative work and the military authorities as far as Jaffna development work was concerned.

  • Once Army Demining Completes, Jaffna Fort is to Receive Facelift

    One of our historic heritage sites in the North, the Dutch-built Jaffna Fort is to be restored to bring back its ancient majesty at a cost of Rs 100 million, provided by the government of Netherlands. Maintenance of the Fort remained completely neglected until the Fort was recaptured by the Security Forces in the Riviresa operation in early 1996.   • CROSS EXAMINING ON SECOND WITNESS TO CONTINUE

    The Second Court Martial probing into charges against General Sarath Fonseka’s alleged violation of military procurement procedures resumed its sittings at 2.00 p.m. on Monday (July 19) as scheduled. The second witness’ examination in chief was concluded by the prosecution and the cross examination commenced. Defence is to continue its cross examination on the second witness.....

  • Woman's Suicide Bid Foiled by Police and Army Officers

    A SOLDIER and a policeman rescued a 28 year old woman who attempted to commit suicide by jumping into the sea at Bambalapitiya yesterday afternoon. The soldier and the policeman were on duty at a check point on the marine drive, when they saw the woman jumping into the sea, police media spokesman Prishantha Jayakody said. The police constable who was on duty at a check post near the sea at Bambalapitiya had seen the woman jumping into the sea.

  • Army Special Forces Praised for Demining Seabed

    VILLAGERS and the fisherfolk of Mullaitivu praised the Special Forces of the Sri Lanka Army for having taken timely action to clear the seabed of mines and other ordinances, reports from Mullaitivu said yesterday. There was the possibility of these unexploded mines and artillery shells being washed ashore or getting entangled in nets posing a grave danger to civilians. The SF Commander in Mullaitivu Maj. Gen.   • Over 300 Ex-Tigers to Sit GCE A/L

    OVER 300 ex-LTTE cadres would sit for the GCE (Advanced Level) Examination in August, Commissioner General of Rehabilitation, Brigadier Sudantha Ranasinghe said yesterday. He said that LTTE had forcibly recruited those students into its fighting units at the expense of their education and wellbeing.

  • 'Establishment of New Army Camps Expedites Return of Civil Buildings,' says Commander

    The newly-built Headquarters complex of the 68 Division at Sugandirapuram, Puthukudiyiruppu was ceremonially handed over to the use of gallant soldiers in the Army by Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya Thursday (22) morning when he visited there as Chief Guest.
