New Military Secretary Takes Office

Major General H.C.P Goonetilleke assumed duties as the new Military Secretary at Army Headquarters Tuesday (20) morning during a brief ceremony. Major General Goonetilleke succeeded Major General A.W.J.C de Silva.

Major General Goonetilleke joined the Sri Lanka Army on 31 August 1981 as an officer cadet and was commissioned in the Corps of Engineers as a Second Lieutenant on 17 July 1982.

To this date, he has held a number of key appointments during his military career. He was the Security Forces Commander, Kilinochchi after he served as General Officer Commanding, 56 Division and General Officer Commanding Area Headquarters, Mannar. He was appointed the Director Training at Army Headquarters after his stints as Commander 533 Brigade, Commander 551 Brigade, Nagarkovil and Directing Staff at Army Command and Staff College.

He has graduated from the National Defence University, Islamabad, Pakistan obtaining a Master’s Degree in Defence and Strategic Studies. He has also followed a few more professional courses and attended several overseas seminars. He has been awarded Uththama Seva Padakkama (USP) and Rana Sura Padakkama (RSP) in recognition of his service to the country.

Major General Goonetilleke initialed an official document at his new office and signified the acceptance of the appointment. Several senior officers attended the occasion.
