OVER 300 ex-LTTE cadres would sit for the GCE (Advanced Level) Examination in August, Commissioner General of Rehabilitation, Brigadier Sudantha Ranasinghe said yesterday.
He said that LTTE had forcibly recruited those students into its fighting units at the expense of their education and wellbeing.
"We identified 594 as students from the government-run rehabilitation centres, prepared 378 of them for the A/L exam and released others after rehabilitation," Brig. Ranasinghe said.
He said that the military ran a special school for those A/L students with the assistance of the Education Ministry. The school functions within the premises of the Vavuniya Tamil Primary School.
"We have provided them with what they need such as books, stationery, tuition, food and lodging and they only have to study hard," he said.
According to him, the military identified 11,800 ex-LTTE cadres for rehabilitation from the IDP camps and some of them were among those who had surrendered to the military. There were 152 university students among them and they were sent to the Jaffna University. About 3,000 former LTTE cadres were released after rehabilitation and some of them were employed in the private sector. (Courtesy: The Island)
