  • Army ruggerites emerge victors once again

    CH & FC teams, regardless of their many unbroken records, suffered a humiliating defeat on Saturday (19) at the Army grounds when the Army ruggerites crushed their rivals during their encounter.

  • SLNG, Army Karate champions 2004

    Inter Regiment Karate Tournament, another grueling event of the army sports calendar, took place on 16 and 17 of June at the Panagoda Army Physical Education School. Contestants from thirteen Regiments including Sri Lanka Army Women's Corps vied for the trophy exhibiting their high mental and physical strength in the field of sports as they did in the battlefield during decades long war fought in north and east.
  • Soldiers help those stranded

    Soldiers, based in Jaffna peninsula came forward to provide food and drinks for thousands of stranded pilgrims returning from Wattappalai Kannaki Amman Kovil festival in un-cleared areas since transport and normalcy in the area remained disrupted when they were homebound due to a protest staged against the killing of journalist Mr. Nadeshan in the east.
  • Isolated LTTE Member With His Boat Captured

    PUTTALAM: ON DETECTION OF A suspicious boat movement at the THALAVILA coastal line yesterday (17) around 5.00 p.m. KALPITIYA Police with the assistance of the local civilians arrested an unidentified person on board a Fiber Glass Dingy (FGD) who was later identified as a member of scattered Tamil Tiger Terrorist group that carried a futile mission in the morning. The Tamil Tiger terrorist who was arrested after the information given by civilian in the general area kept under the custody of KALPITIYA Police for further interrogation. The SLMM was informed. Police commenced investigations.
  • Many More Bombs Recover After LTTE Futile Mission

    PAMUNUGAMA, WATTALA: PAMUNUGAMA POLICE have recovered one more powerful bomb from the SETHTHUPADUWA beach, PAMUNUGAMA similar to the previous two bombs recovered from VENNAPPUWA costal area which was abandoned by LTTE terrorists after their futile mission yesterday (17) around 6.00 p.m. The bomb which was carrying a large quantity of explosive was another latest Improvised Explosive Devise (IED) of LTTE that could detonate under any weather condition defused by the Bomb Disposal Team of the Air Force. Similarly Police with the assistance of Security Forces commenced a clearing operation in search of more other war like items believed to be abandoned by LTTE terrorists in the area.
  • LTTE Attack On Police Post And Navy Successfully Retaliated

    MANNAR: THE POLICE POST at PESALAI and TALAIMANNAR Navy detachment came under LTTE attack from land and sea around 6.55 a.m. on 17 June 2006. LTTE had launched twelve (12) boats to carry out this attack and the Navy had been able to destroy eight (8) boats while damaging another three (3) which resulted in killing at least thirty (30) LTTE sea tigers. Six Navy personnel have been killed and another three suffered injuries during the confrontation while two Navy boats too were damaged. The LTTE terrorists continued their practice of targeting innocent civilians when they fire and injured civilians who took shelter at the PESALAI Church. The Army artillery fire and MI-24 Gun ships of the Air Force assisted in countering the failed LTTE attack. Situation has been totally brought controlled by the Security Forces.
  • LTTE Suicide Mission Averted

    NEGAMBO: CIVILIANS HAVE OBSERVED TWO SUSPECTED persons in the PAMUNUGAMA beach area around 5.30 a.m. on 17 June 2006 had followed them along the beach. On detection of the presence of the civilians one suspected person has swallowed cyanide and had collapsed on the beach while an explosion had taken place in the sea. The civilians have informed this to the Police immediately while the second person also had swallowed cyanide. Meanwhile another explosion had also taken place about 50 m north of the initial explosion where the civilians had observed a person suddenly fleeing the scene and Police with the assistance of the civilians arrested the suspect. Inquiries into the incident reveals that the LTTE terrorists had been trying to carry out a suicide mission but failed due to the vigilance of civilians in the area. It is believed that seven (7) diving equipments have been used for this futile mission where three such had been recovered and the Army Bomb Disposal Team also arrived at the location. The two terrorists who had swallowed cyanide had been admitted to the hospital. The Security Forces and Police are conducting search operations in the area with the assistance of the civilians.

    Ability and readiness of Sri Lankan Army soldiers to take up challenges even during the peacetime was amply witnessed when Army and Police athletic teams met at the second Army Police Duel Athletic Meet at the Sugathadasa Stadium today (17 July 2004).
