Ability and readiness of Sri Lankan Army soldiers to take up challenges even during the peacetime was amply witnessed when Army and Police athletic teams met at the second Army Police Duel Athletic Meet at the Sugathadasa Stadium today (17 July 2004).
The overall championship of the meet was won by the Sri Lanka Army scoring 218 points and Sri Lanka Police became the runnerup with 77. This annual grand sports event, first started in year 2003 was aimed at strengthening mutual understanding between Army and Police members through sports. This annual event enables them to co-operate with each other in their joined ventures, meant for safeguarding the peace and maintaining law and order in the country.
It undoubtedly, is an opportunity to boost their morale whilst maintaining physical strength and exhibiting their skills in the field of sports. Athletes of the Army and the Police who earned reputation at national and international levels increased the importance of the event.
Over three hundred sportsmen and sportswomen took part in this Army - Police Duel Athletic meet which consisted of nearly thirty three track and field events.
Lieutenant General S.H.S.Kottegoda, Commander of the Army, Senior Officers of the Army and the Police attended the meet which was graced by the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Indra De Silva as the Chief Guest. A grand cultural show presented by the Army and the Police dancing and cultural troops brought the meet to an end.
The Commander of the Army, Inspector General of Police Mr. Indra De Silva and Mrs. Indra De Silva gave away awards to winners. S/676754 Lance Corporal A.M.P.P.S. Adhikari of the Sri Lanka Army was adjudged the Champion of the male events. Lance Corporal P.D.M.Wikramasinhe of the Sri Lanka Army was awarded the Championship of the female events.
