Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage, Commander of the Army on Wednesday (22) lent his best wishes and compliments to one more Senior Officer, Major General R.W Ponnamperuma RSP psc, General Officer Commanding of the 68 Division of the Security Force HQ-Mullaittivu on the eve of his retirement from the Army upon completion of more than three decades of unblemished service. The outgoing Senior Officer at the invitation of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage, together with his family members arrived at the Commander’s office.

Three senior executive members of the ‘All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama' (ACJU) organization on Tuesday (21) had a cordial interaction with Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage, Commander of the Army at the Commander's office and appraised him of the mandate and role of the ACJU. During the cordial meeting, they handed over a booklet they recently released, ‘Century of Service’ on account of the ACJU's centenary to the Army Chief and explained how the ACJU remains committed for promotion of ethnic harmony, co-existence and reconciliation. At the same time, they symbolized the ACJU's goodwill by presenting a Sinhala copy of the Holy Quran to the Commander of the Army.

The National Cadets Corps (NCC) received Presidential Colours and Regiment Colours from His Excellency, the President Ranil Wickremesinghe during a colourful ceremony at the NCC Training Centre (NCCTC) in Rantembe on Sunday (Feb 19) in the presence of a large gathering of distinguished guests and invitees. Before award of those Colours to the NCC, a ceremonial parade, composed of 23 Officers, 11 Drill Instructors, 10 Senior Non-Commissioned Officers, and 297 Cadets commanded by Colonel Hemantha Dewapura, Trainee Inspector, NCCTC honoured the day's Chief Guest as a formality.

The 'Janaraja Perahera' of the historic Temple of the Tooth Relic that coincides with the 75th National Independence Ceremony and organized at the request of the government got underway in Kandy on Sunday (19) evening in the presence of a gathering including HE the President and Hon Prime Minister. The procession commenced from the temple's Magul Maduwa premises and wended its way along Dalada Veediya, Yatinuvara Veediya, Kanda Veediya and Raja Veediya before it returned to the same venue. The spectacle that included a large number of caparisoned elephants, dancers, flag holders and whip crackers added glamour and colour to the spectacle. A large crowd watched it.

Giving a further boost to civil-military cooperation projects in the Eastern Province, 5 Sri Lanka Artillery (5 SLA) troops of the 222 Infantry Brigade and the 22 Infantry Division under the Security Force HQ- East (SFHQ - E) enthusiastically coordinated and contributed to a donation of school accessories and essentials to 100 students, learning at Mahawelipura School in Sooriyapura on Tuesday (Feb 14). The 'Blissful Minds' Association through the coordination of the SFHQ - E spent Rs. 2 million for this worthy cause by buying school accessories and essentials for the benefit of students of low-income groups, resident in the area served by the 222 Infantry Brigade. The event was held at School premises after inviting the beneficiaries to the location.

Troops of the 8 Gemunu Watch (GW) under the 611 Infantry Brigade of the 61 Infantry Division under the Security Force HQ-West coordinated the free distribution of dry rations among 120 low-income group families residing in Kuruwita Divisional Secretariat area in Ratnapura on Tuesday (14 Feb) after inviting those families to the Kuruwita Divisional Secretariat office. The Thalagala Sri Siddhartha Foundation (Sri Lanka), led by Ven Thalagala Sumanarathana Nayaka Thero and the Tan Ngak Buay & Kee Meng Lang Foundation Limited of Singapore provided the sponsorship for the donation. These sponsors expect to distribute 1500 dry ration packs among needy people living in Ratnapura District in the future.
