  • Suspected LTTE Supporters Attack Five 'Sam's Chicken' Outlets in Britain

    FIVE ‘Sam's Chicken’ outlets owned by prominent Sinhala businessman Sam Chandrasinha at Wembley, Kingsbury, Wilsden, Sudbury Hill and Cricklewood in London were attacked by suspected Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) supporters last week. Chandrasinha said that these attacks were launched during the early and late night hours of Wednesday (20). "Glass fronts were smashed, but we quickly repaired them and started business again", he said. "However, the staff who are Sinhalese were deeply disturbed by these attacks".

  • UN Secy. Gen. Endorses President's Stance

    UNITED NATIONS Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon endorsed the stance taken by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in bringing the country together and ensuring the equal rights of all citizens irrespective of their racial and religious differences. The UN Chief was speaking to the press at the Queens Hotel, Kandy after his meeting with President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the President’s House in the Hill Capital.

  • Over 10,000 Ex-terrorists Under Govt Care

    FROM the day the Wanni battle took a fierce turn over 10,000 LTTE terrorists surrendered to the military, according to top military officials. The continuous defeats of the LTTE had made its cadres to abandon the outfit in large numbers. Over 7,237 terrorists who had surrendered to the military are now being rehabilitated at various rehabilitation centres. Among them are 1,601 females. Another batch of 202 terrorists including 80 males are living in IDP camps. According to officials, they were identified by the military and separated from the refugees in the welfare camps.

  • Vavuniya Police Find Two Barrels of Explosives

    VAVUNIYA: ON information received by the VAVUNIYA Police, a special search operation was conducted by the Police in SKANDAPURAM area and recovered fifteen bombs this morning (24) around 7.40 a.m..The bombs, each weighing about 9 kg, had been hidden in two barrels and buried in the area when the Police found them. A detonator cord was also found from the scene.

    IN THE aftermath of the rescue operations that were completed a week ago, Army troops were still continuing their search and clear operations in the general area of VELLAMULLIVAIKKAL as late as Sunday (24) since more and more LTTE weapons were being recovered thirty T-56 weapons, three Multi Purpose Machine Guns (MPMG), one Small Machine Gun, one note book, FNC weapon, one modified mini UZI weapon, five T-81 weapons, two SLR weapons.....

    A PROPOSAL by Israel to send a comprehensive investigation team to Sri Lanka to inquire into what they termed as alleged human rights violations by the Government of Sri Lanka has been defeated by countries which are friendly with Sri Lanka at the 62nd General Assembly of the World Health Organisations. Addressing journalists on his return to the island at the BIA, Health Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva said Israel brought forward a proposal calling for the United Nations and the World Health Organisation to send a high profile........

  • President, UNSG Agree on : New Beginning New Opportunities

    PRESIDENT Mahinda Rajapaksa and United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon agreed that following the end of operations against the LTTE, Sri Lanka had entered a new post-conflict beginning. In this context, the Sri Lankan Government faces many immediate and long-term challenges relating to issues of relief, rehabilitation, resettlement and reconciliation.     COLOMBO (PTI): Amid calls for a war crimes probe against its military for its conduct during the campaign to eliminate the LTTE, Sri Lanka on Saturday said US and British troops would have to be hauled before tribunals first if any charges were brought against its armed forces. The remarks came a day after President Mahinda Rajapaksa accused unnamed foreign elements of trying to stop the military offensive "by threatening to haul us before war crimes tribunals" and declared that he was even ready "to go to the gallows" for defeating the Tamil rebels.
