  • Prime Minister Visits Menik Farm Welfare Village

    PRIME MINISTER of Hon Rathnasiri Wickramanayake visited Wanni on 24th December morning to inspect the living conditions of villagers in Welfare Villages in the area. He was accompanied by Wanni Commander Major General Kamal Gunarathna, several senior officers from tri-services and the Police and also the civil authorities in Vavuniya.   • Mach-Infantry Musical Show at Sugathadasa Stadium Draws Huge Crowds

    A MUSICAL SHOW was organized by the Sri Lanka Army Mechanized Infantry Regiment under the guidance of Major General M.P Pieris, the Regimental Commander of Mach-Infantry and Military Secretary at Army Headquarters to collect funds for the welfare of disabled War Heroes and those who have been currently serving in the Regiment. The event was held at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium, Colombo on 25th December evening from 7.30 p.m. unitl  midnight.   • New Auditorium for SFHQ Wanni

    THE FOUNDATION stone laying ceremony for the construction of a new auditorium for Security Forces Headquarters, Wanni took place on 22nd December 2009. The Chief Guest for the occasion was Major General Kamal Gunerathne, The Commander Security Forces, Wanni. The senior officers, officers and other ranks were present on the occasion.     

  • Public Associations in Polgahawela Honour War Heroes

    COMMANDER of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, following a special invitation extended to him by a consortium of social welfare organizations in Polgahawela area attended a Ranaviru felicitation ceremony this evening (27) where War Heroes of all three forces and the Police were felicitated. Sunday’s ceremony was mainly organized by Polgahawela Sashanarakshaka Balamandalaya, North Western Provincial Council Polgahawela, Young Men Buddhist Association and 2600th Buddhist Anniversary Celebrations Committee with the support of other wings in the area. The occasion attended by a host of War Heroes was graced by Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya as Chief Guest.

  • Resettlement Only in Demined Places

    THE Government will not allow re-settlement unless the people are provided with liveable conditions, Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake said. Certain foreign conspirators put the Government into difficulties by demanding the re-settlement of IDPs, liberated areas, he said. The premier was addressing a meeting at the Kadirgamar Relief Centre in Vavuniya following the distribution of dried rations donated by the people in Horana. The Prime Minister said the Government was involved unfailingly in the exercise of removing landmines and the IDPs will be re-settled in the same expeditious way the people were liberated.

    SRI LANKA Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (SLEME) Regiment Seva Vanitha Unit succeeded in donating a complete house to the next of kin of a SLEME soldier who recently died of cancer. Private I.U. Gunawardena (S/2M00746) of 2 SLEME unexpectedly passed away leaving behind members of his family who had been depending on him for survival.   • Singaporean Buddhist Delegation Makes Donation to IDPs Ready for Resettlement

    A 29 MEMBER Buddhist delegation from Singapore who arrived in Sri Lanka with Ven. Karadetiyana Gunarathna Thero distributed   cash, milk powder, toffees and chocolates among 300 Internally Displaced Persons (IDP)  who are about to be resettled and temporarily housed in Puliyankulama Vidyalaya, situated under 563 Brigade. A group of senior officers including the Commander, Security Forces, Wanni Major General G D H K Guneratne were present on the occasion.

    VANNI Security Forces Commander and Competent Authority for IDPs Major General Kamal Gunaratne said that it was a great achievement to resettle more than 173,000 IDPs in their villages within five months which was thought inconceivable by many people and national and international organizations.  Addressing the media at the Vanni Security Forces Headquarters last week, Major General Gunaratne said at the initial stage, the Government had to receive over 282,000 IDPs from LTTE clutches in May and there were only 108,573 IDPs in relief villages as at December 23. Thousands were resettled in their own villages on a daily basis immediately after the area was cleared of mines, he said.     THE THIRD graduation ceremony at the Defence Services Command and Staff College (DSCSC), Sapugaskanda  was held Tuesday (29) morning at the DSCSC auditorium, chaired by Prime Minster Ratnasiri Wickramanayake as Chief Guest. Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Air Force Air Marshal Roshan Gunatillake, Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Tisara Samarasinghe and several former Army Commanders graced the occasion as distinguished guests.
