    A SPECIAL seminar on ‘International Law on Landmines & Explosive Remnants’ organized by the South Asia Small Arms Network, Sri Lanka (SASANET) working in close cooperation with Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and in partnership with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), European Commission (EC), Geneva International Center for Humanitarian De-mining (GICHD) and International Campaign to Ban Landmines got underway this morning (27) at the Ceylon Continental Hotel.   • LTTE Pistols, Hand Grenades & Magazines Found.

    WANNI: ARMY TROOPS continuing the search and clear operations in AKKARAYANKULAM, PUTHUKKUDDIYIRUPPU, VELLAMULLIVAIKKAL, KAPPUKULAM and TANNIYATTU areas found one 60 mm mortar trapping, twenty five Multi Purpose Machine Gun (MPMG) links, one T-56 weapon, two micro pistols, eight micro pistol magazines, forty-two micro pistol rounds, nineteen hand grenades, twenty-two Rocket Propelled grenades (RPG), nine anti personnel mines, one claymore mine and one trapping bomb on Tuesday (27).

  • President Tells KDU Convocation; No Time to Relax, Work Hard

    PRESIDENT Mahinda Rajapaksa said yesterday one cannot afford to relax just because terrorism was defeated but should work hard for the development of the country and national security. He said it was the duty of all to work towards taking the country to a top position in the world. The Security Forces have shown their discipline and exemplary moral conduct in the battlefield during the world’s biggest humanitarian operation by any country and this cannot be denied by anyone.

  • Army Troops Engage in Religious & Social Work in East

    AFTER the Army troops liberated areas in the east which remained under domination of LTTE terrorists nearly for three decades, civilians in those areas have now found their freedom to engage in their social and religious work as they wished. At the end of the annual Vas season of the Buddhist monks, devotees at Aselapura Temple organized a two-day long religious ceremony at the temple on 23rd and 24th October.

  • -œKatina Pooja- at Naga Vihara -“ Jaffna on a Grand Scale

    AFTER a lapse of about 30 years, the “Katina Pooja” at Jaffna Naga Vihara was conducted on a grand scale under the instructions of the Commander Security Forces – Jaffna Major General L B R Mark, supervised by Divisional Commander 51 Division Brigadier Kumudu Perera. Officers and ORs of the units under 51 Division supported the arrangements held last week..Religious observances of the “Katina Pooja” were conducted by the Chief Incumbent of the Naga Vihara Ven Meegahajandure Gnanarathana Thero near the Bodhiya in the evening.

  • Resettlement of Displaced Easterners Completed-Army

    THE ongoing government’s resettlement scheme for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) came to a close in the Eastern Province on Tuesday (27) after Army troops with the help of state agencies and the Police formally completed the re-location under ‘Eastern Re-awakening’ project. The final batch, composed of 9524 easterners, belonging to 3217 families who had been living in the IDP centers in Vavuniya.....

  • KDU Convocation Produces 105 more Military Graduates

    THE Convocation of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) at BMICH Tuesday (27) evening saw 105 military officers receive graduation after completion of their studies in Masters and Bachelors. His Excellency, the President and Commander-in-Chief of Armed Forces Mahinda Rajapaksa as Chief Guest, Secretary Defence Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Tri-service Chiefs and a galaxy of senior military officers and scholars graced the occasion. President Rajapaksa, Chief Guest was received by KDU Chancellor General (Retd) J.A.D Perera on arrival .....

  • Army Troops Receive More Teeth for Development Work

    SRI LANKA Army troops presently well geared up to contributing to the government’s “Uthuru Wasanthaya” (Northern Spring) development programme received further teeth on Wednesday (28) when the government released a new stock of modern machinery and equipment  to the Army for use in development work in the north. A brief ceremony near the Galle Face esplanade saw the new feet of modern machinery and equipment, bought by the government from China on a concessionary.....

  • -œTharunyata Hetak- Programme Goes to Jaffna

    “Tharunyata Hetak,” a project launched by Mr. Namal Rajapaksa in order to uplift goodwill, friendship, understanding and co-existence among the youth of all races spearheaded a number of special programmes in the Jaffna peninsula. The first phase of the programme covered re-painting of the Naga Vihara temple, St. Anthony’s church, Munneshvaram Hindu temple and Jumma mosque. A project to make ten volley ball courts in different places in the peninsula was also launched during this programme.

  • SVAB President Calls on Mrs. Wickramanayake

    PRESIDENT Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) Mrs. Manjulika Jayasuriya called on Mrs. Kusum Wickramanayake, President Seva Vanitha Branch of the Prime Minister office at the PM’s office Wednesday (28) morning. This was Mrs. Jayasuriya’s first official meeting with Mrs. Wickramanayake after the former assumed office as President SVAB. Both of them discussed measures that have already been taken to promote the welfare of War Heroes and their families and various other programmes in progress at different levels.
