  • British Parliamentarian Acclaims Rehabilitation Programme in Vavuniya

    A BRITISH delegation headed by British Parliamentarian Mr. Mike Foster, to get first hand experience on humanitarian de-mining conducted by the Army troops with assistance of de-mining teams in Wanni, visited Parappakandal area in Mannar Tuesday (06). Governor Northern Province Major General (Retd) G.A. Chandrasiri and Commander Security Forces Headquarters (SFHQ-W) Major General Kamal Gunaratne received the delegation on their arrival.

  • Rehabilitated Tiger (LTTE) Youths Re-join Their Families

    A LARGE number of young men and women who had been active members or supporters of the LTTE and later surrendered or fell into custody of the Security Forces found their new life subsequent to the rehabilitation offered to them by the government. After initial inquiries, they were directed to the rehabilitation centre at Thelippalai in Jaffna under patronage and supervision of Security Forces Headquarters-Jaffna (SFHQ-J).

    THE Sri Lanka Army’s 60th Anniversary marks a very significant milestone in the history of the Army being the year in which it won, decisively the war against terrorism. As the 19th Commander of the Sri Lanka Army, it gives me immense pleasure to write this message on this auspicious occasion. With the advent of the Second World War in 1939 the Ceylon Defence Force was mobilised. Subsequently a reorganised Ceylon Defence Force that comprised of a regular Artillery Unit, an Engineer unit, 5 Ceylon Light Infantry Battalions and with expanded signals, medical and logistics units to meet the requirement was established.

  • COMMANDER'S ARMY DAY ADDRESS AT ARMY HEADQUARTERS

    AS the Sri Lanka Army’ 19th Commander, I am very pleased and delighted to address you at a time the Army, composed of brave War Heroes celebrates its 60th Anniversary with pride and dignity after evicting LTTE terrorism  and bringing freedom to the motherland which brought surprise to the entire world. Had our War Heroes with the support of other Armed Forces failed to destroy Prabhakaran, it is needless to say the country’s future would have been a critical one as you can understand.

  • Army Anniversary Stamp & Coin Released

    THE second leg of the Army Day’s celebrations and continuing 60th Anniversary ceremonies was marked at Army Headquarters auditorium this morning (10) when the Department of Postal Services and the Central Bank of Sri Lanka released the 60th Anniversary First Day Cover and Stamp and the Silver Coin, worth Rs. 1000/= during a brief ceremony.  
    Release of the First Day Cover and the Stamp took place at first. The issue of the new Rs.1000/= worth 60th Anniversary Silver Coin occurred afterwards as the next item on the agenda.

    SRI LANKA Army, the renowned “Defenders of the Nation” which has triumphantly accomplished a record multiplicity of tasks in its sixty years of survival as a distinguished and admirable force to reckon with, marked its 60th Anniversary cum Army Day (Oct 10th) today during a colourful parade and other important features. Commemoration of the Diamond Jubilee of the Army, an anniversary made exceptionally significant comes in the wake of an unparalleled period of our history that saw elimination of the most ruthless terror outfit which caused irreparable losses, mayhem and carnage during the past thirty years of our contemporary times. 

  • New Wings in Military Hospital Opened; Commander Speaks to Recuperating War Heroes

    THE new Operation Theater Complex, Intensive Care Unit, Dialysis Unit and Ward Complex built at the military hospital Narahenpita was declared open this afternoon (10) by Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya during his hospital visit subsequent to formal ceremonies at Army Headquarters in connection with the Army’s 60th Anniversary. Army Commander, the Chief Guest of the occasion, accompanied by President Seva Vanitha Army Branch Mrs. Manjulika Jayasuriya and a host of senior officers prior to the opening ceremony attended religious observances conducted by Maha Sangha who chanted seth pirith and invoked blessings.....

  • Army 60th Anniversary Pirith Chanting & Alms Giving Culminates

    THE final leg of the religious observances in connection with the Army’s 60th Anniversary came to a close Sunday (11) afternoon after an alms-giving to over sixty Bhikkus followed by a whole night Pirith chanting at Sri Bodhirajaramaya, Panagoda Saturday (10). Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya attended the Pirith chanting and alms-giving organized by the Army Buddhist Assocation.   • Weapons, Ammo, Diesel & other LTTE Warlike Items Found

    WANNI: ANOTHER stock of different types of ammunition along with a number of T-56 weapons and other LTTE items including some barrels of diesel were found by the troops combing WANNI jungles and digging earth in search of terrorist weaponry, kept hidden in those areas Sunday (11). During Sunday’s (11) search and clear operations in the general areas of VISUAMADU, AMPAKAMAM, PUTHUKKUDIYIRUPPU, KAPPUKULAM and VELLANKULAM   troops found six 60 mm mortar bombs, one Arul bomb, three thousand and five hundred rounds of Multi Purpose Machine Gun (MPMG) ammunition....

  • Central Bank of SL Officially Announces Release of Army 60th Anniversary Coins

    The following Press Release has been issued by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka in connection with the official release of Army 60th Anniversary commemorative coins ; The Sri Lanka Army (SLA) completes 60 years on 10.10.2009. To mark this event and to publicize the achievement of the SLA in liberating the entire country from the grip of terrorism, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) will issue two  commemorative coins in the denomination of Rupees 1000.
