COMMEMORATIVE COIN TO MARK THE 60th ANNIVERSARY OF THE SRI LANKA ARMY
The Sri Lanka Army (SLA) completes 60 years on 10.10.2009. To mark this event and to publicize the achievement of the SLA in liberating the entire country from the grip of terrorism, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) will issue two commemorative coins in the denomination of Rupees 1000.
In terms of section 52 A (1) (a) and ( b) of the Monetary Law Act (Amendment) No.6 of 1998, with the approval of the Hon. Minister of Finance, the Central Bank issues commemorative coins and notes, and sells such coins and notes at a price higher than the specified denomination. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka has issued commemorative coins to mark various important events and persons since 1957 and the coins to mark the 60th Anniversary of the SLA will be the 45th and 46th commemorative coins that are being issued.
The obverse depicts a soldier holding the National flag of Sri Lanka with one hand and his weapon with the other, and the map of Sri Lanka in the background, symbolizing the SLA safeguarding the territorial integrity of the country. The words “VICTORY THROUGH SACRIFICE” appear in Sinhala, Tamil and English around the map.
The reverse depicts the logo of the SLA in the middle and the years 1949 and 2009 appear on either side of the logo. The face value of the coin “1000” in large numerals appears below the logo with the words “RUPEES” in Sinhala, Tamil and English on the right. The words “DIAMOND JUBILEE” and “SRI LANKA” in Sinhala, Tamil and English appear on the periphery of the coin. The year 2009 is depicted below the value of the coin.
One coin has been minted in sterling silver, and the other in copper/nickel, in brilliant uncirculated type. These will be issued in an attractive presentation case accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. Both coins are round in shape and the diameter of the silver coin is 28.4 mm with a weight of 11.9 grammes, while the diameter of the copper/nickel coin is 28.5 mm with a weight of 8.25 grammes.
This issue is limited to 10,000 silver coins and 200,000 copper/nickel coins. A silver coin will be sold at a price of Rs 2,200 and a copper/ nickel coin will be issued at its face value of Rs 1000 through the Central Bank Money Museum at No. 58, Sri Jayawardenapura Mawatha Rajagiriya , at CBSL Regional Offices at Anuradhapura, Matara and Matale, and on line through the Central Bank website: www. cbsl.gov.lk. from 12th October 2009.
